Million dollar gamble

Million Dollar Drop, the latest game show in production for Nine and Eddie McGuire, is an 'all-or-nothing' format.

Yesterday  TV Tonight swung by a recording of Million Dollar Drop, the latest game show in production for Nine and Eddie McGuire.

Based on a UK format, the feature of this one hour quiz is putting $1M cash in bundles of notes in front of contestants and watching them scramble to stop the total from dropping away, literally, through a hatch.

Nine has built a shiny set 8 metres high at Docklands Studios, loaded up with a ton of lights. Actual Security Guards watch over the cash.

Unlike some shows where contestants have to accrue the cash by answering Millionaire-style questions, this one begins at the other end. In yesterday’s episode a couple ran through a rollercoaster of emotions debating questions and working out how much to risk each round. This is an ‘all-or-nothing’ format.

For Nine it’s also a bit of a game show gamble.

The show is yet to be scheduled, but expect this one sooner rather than later.

  1. Not a bad idea but why not use someone like Charli Robinson or any of the previous generation hi 5 presenters looking to move on from Children’s Television to host the show. There is too much Eddie everywhere otherwise.

  2. @Guy, I love watching the UK version on UTube, if Nine sat and watched they would realise why its so popular… its live, you play at home online while there playing on TV, trying to beat them, and the online stats (34% of online players still have $500,000 in play) are displayed and commented on by the host. Its interactive and fun in the UK, Nine will just make it pre-recorded and Eddie!

  3. I can’t be the only one who can see the natural progression…
    Nine loves Eddie.
    Nine loves 2 & 1/2 Men.
    2 & 1/2 Men just lost it’s star.
Nine, to beg Hollywood to make Eddie the new star.

Nine to run the new 2 & 1/2 Men (with Eddie) 24 hours a day.
    🙂

  4. I still like the occasional gameshow however why is it when ever the 9 network launch a gameshow that Eddie is the host doesnt 9 Nine have anyone else to host it maybe a female host would be nice. But i think i will give this a go to see what all the fuss is about.

  5. I also was at the recording last monday and i think i klnow why thye use eddie, he doesnt have many stuff ups, he is good on his feet (knowing the right things to say to contenstants at the right time) he does not rely on auto cues, but in saying that I also think that if they could get somebody else would be nice

  6. @garry, perhaps it’s just wishful thinking on my part 🙂

I can’t help thinking, though, that Nine would be pulling more viewers if Eddie wasn’t so prevalent – absolutely everyone I speak to actively dislikes his TV persona and doesn’t watch what he presents. He just reminds me of the same blokey, anachronistic style that the network has had for decades.

  7. When is Nine going to learn we are sick of the sight of Eddie. Why can’t they get a young host, even a newcomer to do the job? Oh wait this is Nine we are talking about. All they care about is Eddie and Two and A Half Men which seems to be gone now. Nine need to learn. They are not learning so let them to continue to slide.

  8. Geez, David – I was joking!
I have no idea if EMcG uses nose candy or is anti-semetic or dislikes trolls!
Given the sad dissolution of the other channel 9 star I just amused myself (and only me, apparently) with the comparison.
Maybe I should have put a smiley face after my comment.

  9. You would think they would try and make it seem like something new rather than just another Eddie show. I stopped watching Eddie after he kept asking anyone who wasn’t white what their background was. I found it really awkward but I certainly wouldn’t say he was racist. I find him totally lacking in charisma but I think most Australian’s think he’s a top bloke everyman type which is why they keep putting him in roles where he interacts with the commoners. Interesting to see Adam Hills do the same thing so much better on his show.

  10. @Gonzo, i assume you are discluding the US version recently aired on FOX, Huge flop.

@garry, Vancouver Gold was a flop, the National IQ test last year was a flop, Lights Camera Party was a flop, as you mentioned 1vs.100. flop. and now This is Your Life is a flop all hosted by eddie. thats just off the top of my head, there’s plenty, probably more flops than hits.

  11. It seems that Channel 9 stands soley on the twin towers of Eddie and 2.5 Men.

How long before Eddie starts believing that he too is a “rock star” “warlock existing in this terrestrial dimension” and starts fighting with Trolls and Jewish TV producers?

    1. Steveany that’s pretty harsh. Like any talent, Eddie is doing the job he is hired to do without having to be inferred as racist for doing so, or even being likened to Mr. Sheen. There’s no evidence of that.
