Nigel Lythgoe wants So You Think You Can Dance on Seven or Nine

"If the TEN Network don't want it we're going to have to take it off them and take it to Seven or Nine," says producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Nigel Lythgoe, producer and co-creator of So You Think You Can Dance wants to the show back on Australian television.

Interviewed by Dance Informa magazine, Lythgoe took a dim view of TEN dumping the show after its 2010 season.

“I think they were incorrect in letting it go. I think they tried another programme which failed badly without it.”

While there was no show that specifically replaced Dance, he is presumably referring to TEN’s plans to produce Don’t Stop Believing this year, a decision it then reversed.

“If the TEN Network don’t want it we’re going to have to take it off them and take it to Seven or Nine with another production company,” he said.

Lythgoe even also spoke about seeing the show produced by another production company.

“I love Fremantle they’ve done very well with it, but if they’re not selling it anywhere else it’ll have to go to Shine.”

  1. Ahh if Freemantle can’t sell it, then how will Shine sell it? Who wants it? Nine hasn’t had any luck with those formats and Seven already has a format that works… Ten is probably hungry for a show? Would they take Dance back ???
Hmm lets see here what other shows went to another network and failed.
Sure there has to be a big list ???

  2. Good on you Nigel, would love to see SYTYCT back on the telly,it was a great version (the Aussie one),like all the other readers I agree a Sunday timeslot was the most appriopriate,it’s over to you 7 or 9.

  3. While it may not have been rating well on Ten in 2010, I think trying it on Eleven could work – stick it back in the Sunday and Monday slots and I’m sure it would become one of Eleven’s higher rating programs.

  4. I really like Channel 10’s reality shows more than Channel 7s and Channel 9s. If Dance comes on 7 or 9, it pretty much be a ratings bomb like Thank God Your Here. Currently the competition for The Biggest Loser is really interesting (well at least theres some b*tching). Dance will pretty end up like Australian Idol and The X Factor. I really hope they bring back Big Brother though. Well if its format was like 10 years ago.

Channel 10 is already rising in its comedy and drama sections as you can see with Glee, Modern Family, Raising Hope. Though I’m dissapointed it moved some of their best shows to Channel 11. 7, 9, 10, abc and sbs were always the original and the public will always remember those channels

  5. The 7 and 9 Networks are all about the money and ratings a lot more so than Ten. If the show does go to 7 and 9 i think it will not perform any better and they will axe it or it will only last for that season not any longer and Nigel Lythgoe will be shocked. Nigel needs to understand that their is only one network in this country which is more likely to treat a show like SYTYCD well and thats Network Ten. We still havent heard from 7 whether the X Factor Australia will have a new season, iam not holding my breath.

  6. I’d like to see it back – maybe Fridays for the performance show and Sundays for the results though. I’m really enjoying relaxing with the US version on Friday nights on eleven.

  7. Although I thought the Bass improved as host by the end of the last season, the local version failed partly because of the dreadful judges. Jason Coleman, with his condescending attempts to ‘educate’ the audience (and don’t get me started on his repetitious “yeah?” as a form of comment…) and that awfully dull, uninteresting Bonnie Lythgoe who rarely (if ever) said anything insightful or useful to the dancers. The highlight of the last season was when they had Mary Murphy as a guest judge. Just keep showing the US version on Eleven.

  8. I like Dance, but it’s be interesting to see Jason Coleman’s or someone in the dancing industry on their opinion. Someone needs to put up decent prize money and a new role in a production etc.

  9. The Australian version is a wet copy of the US version. Natalie Bassingthwaite can’t hold a candle to Cat Deeley as far as natural warmth is concerned. The Aus version is set up (as most reality / talent shows are here) for maximum sobstory value. The skill and talent part goes by the wayside. The US version has dynamism and dare I say Artfulness. The Aus version has kleenex and badly manipulated and confected ‘drama’. Needs a dramatic rethink.

  10. People that say it struggled because it was on wednesday and that it should move back to Sunday are forgetting the reason it moved in the first place…. Because it was flopping on Sunday. Viewers didn’t support it in 2010 I don’t see why they would if given another chance. Move on and give something new a shot, better to try something untested than retry something that is tested and failed.

  11. I love SYTYCD … take it off 10 and give it to Seven … Nine will just stuff it up and change the scheduling every week!
    Always prefered this to Idol.

  12. About time someone stood up for australian television shows dedicated to finding local talent! FOX8 are doing their fair share by this year launching Live To Dance to compensate for TEN dropping the only real dance related show in Australia, but TEN was once known as The reality network and now their getting deeper and deeper in crap.

  13. i think 10 were stupid to move it to wednesday and thursday nights for the 3rd season of dance.

they should have stuck with it on sunday night.

that being said bring back australian idol…come on nigel…you’re part of idol too…force ch 10 to bring it back

  14. Dance should come back on ten in 2012!! The show did really well until tel moved it to wed and thur!! worst move ever! Bring it back next yr and put it back to sundays and mondays.
