Returning: Stargate Universe

New episodes return to the SciFi Channel, while there are distant hopes for new TV movies.

Could Stargate Universe return as television movies?

That’s the hope of producer Joseph Mallozzi who wrote about his ambitions on his blog.

The series, which was axed in December, returns to the US Syfy network today with the first of ten final episodes.

He is hoping by the time the season finale ‘Gauntlet’ airs he’ll have definite word on a potential movie or two.

“If it’s a go and fans can look forward to a proper end to Destiny’s mission, then ‘Gauntlet’ will certainly set the stage for a grand conclusion,” he wrote.

“If, on the other hand, things don’t pan out and ‘Gauntlet’ does turn out to be the bittersweet finale, fans will be thrilled, touched, heartbroken… and left to wonder what could have been.”

In Australia the SciFi Channel continues to fasttrack the series, airing a new episode from 8:30pm this Thursday. ELEVEN plays repeats ….at exactly the same time.

  1. SGU suffers because the tone of the show was influenced by network demands. They wanted something dark like battlestar galatica, but not as adult and that the younger audience of Stargate would watch.

They didn’t look at the fact SG1 and Atlantis were both watched and enjoyed by young and old.

They wanted the mesh the shows. The idea was, star gate viewers have stuck around for 15 season of both series, they’ll all stay for a new SG show. Then they hoped the attract BSG viewers who didn’t watch SG. Unfortunately it didn’t work.

Although the main reason the show was cancelled was that SyFy moved it to a dead night in the ratings and didn’t want to put it in a spot with any priority on the schedual.

All that said, I really like the show. I’ll be sad to see it gone, although happy if we get a movie or two to wrap it up. Which chances are probably good. Stargate has always sold well on DVD and for MGM who get the dvd money, not Syfy, it makes the whole package of selling SGU on DVD more viable if it’s a complete series with an ending.

I know from friends of mine, they were put off SGU in the weak first half of Season One. Which honestly, started decent, then dragged and got better. However everything from second half of season one onwards has pretty much been of a high standard.

I’ll be sad to see this kind of show gone from the air. Hopefully once this is all done, MGM can pitch a new star gate series to another network not SyFy. I say just combine elements and some characters from all shows. The main SG1 and Atlantis sets are still standing ready to be used.

  2. SGU is good i just have one question for you david (i know that this is a pay tv story but) does Network Ten have plans to get more sci-fi content on. One good sugestion would be to reaquire the rights to Sliders and to gain Farscape and Andromeda. That way they could have a full Sci-fi Night on 11.

  3. So it’s SGU vs SGU.

Also Universe on one channel is airing against a show showing on another channel which has the words “The Next Generation” in its title while on the other
channel for Universe it precedes the screening of another TNG show.

For Universe’s Sci Fi screening it is at the same time of Degrassi: The Next
Generation on ABC3 while Universe’s Eleven screening is preceding Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  4. @ Craig

I’ve only seen what’s on Eleven. I will admit my favourite Stargate is SG-1 but I also liked Atlantis although I still haven’t seen all of Season 2 & 3 due to Seven not putting it on reliably. I’ve yet to watch the DVDs of Atlantis. That said I liked the characters although they also had some creative problems on the show mainly due to the writers I think. SGU is worse. The problem isn’t that the characters or show is dark. The problem is the writers just can’t write dark very well. Most of the characters I don’t like or respect. Nor can I remember all their names due to not caring. The Colonel on the ship makes stupid decision after stupid decision. Actually they had the people at Stargate Command make stupid decisions too and almost destroy the ship (not to mention employing most of the crew in the first place). Urgh. I don’t blame the characters but the writers for these decisions. I’ll admit I’d heard it was bad and I’m watching to see how low it goes. Because at least it’s free. Too bad they couldn’t of done something like Supernatural with comedy and dark. As they’re alright when it comes to comedy.

The other problem is they seem to move the plot at a glacial pace. It often takes an episode to just get one thing done. Plus there was that Groundhog Day that killed near everyone and didn’t get solved onscreen. I guess they just rinse and repeated until maybe no-one was killed. I’m amazed! Too bad they just didn’t want to show them succeeding at something. Although I’ll admit I don’t care enough about it to be upset I didn’t get to see it.

Just to say something nice I don’t mind Eli. Even the concept of being on a ship far from home is fine. I’ll leave it there before I’m tempted to say something else bad about it. Sorry for the length David.

  5. Addendum: I do get this is the Pay TV section but I like to read it occasionally about subjects that interest me. Sorry if I’m being too picky chalk it up to tiredness please.

  6. To those of us with free-to-air only the Ch 11 stuff isn’t repeats: except for the first three episodes. And that was needed because it had been around a year since it had been on during the Christmas/New Year period in 2009/2010 . So it’d hardly maximise its viewers. And provided a reminder to those that did see it. But it’s beyond the third episode now, hence: not repeats. So different peoples point of view might vary on that issue.

As for the story about a movie I doubt it will happen. The show didn’t rate very well on a cable network. Thank you for telling us about it however.

  7. Hey David, sorry to be this guy but there are two spelling mistakes in the first sentence of the third paragraph. Dont post this comment, just wanted to give you the heads up =p.
