SBS April – June: highlights

A new season of East West 101, Eurovision 2011, Who Do You Think You Are?, FA Cup, a drama series with six disabled characters, plus Monster Moves, Anthony Bourdain and Denmark’s Emmy-winning The Protectors -these are just some of the treats in store on SBS ONE across the next three months.

There will also be continuing episodes of Man vs Wild, Mythbusters, Dateline, Insight, South Park, plus documentaries, film, factual, sport, lifestyle and entertainment.

Here are some select highlights you can expect to see:

APRIL:

East West 101
East West 101 has proven to be one of the most gritty and ground-breaking dramas in Australian television history, winning a slew of accolades in 2010 alone. The upcoming seven-part drama series will explore the fallout from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through crimes committed in Australia. And with a slew of awards and an injection of new talent, the third season promises to be more explosive, emotional and gripping than ever.

The Story of Science
Michael Mosley takes an informative and ambitious journey exploring how the evolution of scientific understanding is intimately interwoven with society’s historical path in this new six part series.

Empire of the Seas
Dan Snow tells the epic story of the battle between the European powers to control the seas – a story of trade, exploration and industrial innovation marred by slavery, piracy and tragic naval disasters.

Animal Monster Moves
Animal Monster Moves follows the daredevil adventures of specialist vets and transport engineers as they attempt to relocate herds of elephants, killer sharks, rhinos and horses across the globe by air, sea, train and road.

Paris-Roubaix
The most prestigious single-day professional road cycling race, the Paris-Roubaix is known for its rough terrain and cobblestones, which Make for a gruelling event.

MAY:

The Eurovision Song Contest
The fun, glamour and madness is back as Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang return to head up SBS’s exclusive coverage of the 56th annual Eurovision Song Contest.

The Secret History of Eurovision
The Secret History of Eurovision is a smart and fast-paced account of a great European institution. It’s packed with classic pop, backstage intrigues, misbehaving auto-cues and some truly astonishing flared trousers.

The Protectors
The 2009 International Emmy winning Danish drama series The Protectors comes to SBS in 2011. In today’s violent world, the lives of many politicians, industrialists, heads of state and other VIPs are endangered. Luckily, they can all rely on competent, quick-thinking and utterly loyal bodyguards.

Skippers
This six-part observational documentary series takes the audience aboard working fishing vessels in the Irish fleet to meet the men who lead these boats.

Who Do You Think You Are?
This nine-part series features Bruce Forsyth, comedian Alexander Armstrong, actors Alan Cumming, Hugh Quarshie, Rupert Penry-Jones and Rupert Everett, actress Dervla Kirwan, gardener Monty Don and Australian soap star Jason Donovan.

Inside the Force
A three-part series following the Hampshire Constabulary in the UK, follows a typical large provincial police force as they investigate major crimes.

Monster Moves
The six-part series returns with some of the most daring and dangerous relocation projects ever attempted.

FA Cup Final
The best club football teams in the English football leagues do battle in the world’s longest running and most respected club football tournament, the FA Cup.

Giro d’Italia
The Giro d’Italia is one of cycling’s three Grand Tours, alongside the Tour de France and La Vuelta a España.

Tour of California
The largest cycling event in America, the Tour of California travels almost the full length of California over eight stages.

JUNE:
Cast Offs
Cast Offs is a darkly comic drama series telling the story of six disabled characters sent to a remote British island for a fictional reality TV show.

Seduction in the City
The fascinating story of the ladies department store and how it became greatest invention to come out of the industrial revolution.

Rescue 117
For the first time ever cameras have been given exclusive access to the Irish Coast Guard’s helicopter Search and Rescue service.

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
