Motorsports channel SPEED has announced a two-year broadcast deal to become the new home for the IZOD Indycar Series.
The American-based open-wheel racing series is staged over eight months across 13 different venues in the US and includes a handful of international events in Canada, Brazil and Japan.
It is contested by 15 teams and features two prominent Australian drivers, Ryan Briscoe and Will Power.
SPEED will provide live coverage of all 17 Indycar Series races this season, including the sport’s flagship Indianapolis 500 event in May.
James Harrison, SPEED Channel Manager, said: “The series has a very strong following in Australia, which was forged over the long association with the Gold Coast Indycar event,” he said.
“Although the Gold Coast event has not been held in recent years, there is still a strong local interest in the series with the two Aussies Ryan Briscoe and Will Power expected to feature among the top drivers this season.”
The 2011 IZOD Indycar Series begins on Monday 28 March with live coverage of the Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg from 3.30am AEDT on SPEED & SPEED HD.

@Mitch, thanks for the feedback.
@stuart. viewers choice. like they have on the main foxsports channels
@Dans Dans. a full race replay
So what happens when NASCAR and Indycar series clash?
or had ONE HD have the live rights to NASCAR?
If not there will be angry Marcos Ambrose fans
vs
Ryan Briscoe and Will Power fans
Great news for Indycar fans, good to see its a two year deal since next year will be really interesting with the new car/engine package.
Still no speed on Austar I love motor sports but am not aloud to have a choice to watch sport such as Nascar or indycar
This is a good deal for Speed. At the moment all of the Motoracing in the US is on cable Television. Meanwhile i can imagine that FOX SPORTS will relay live coverage of the IndyCar season from Speed from time to time. I personally dont think thatt Austar will aquire Speed and offer it to their subscribers in my opinion this is a great oportunity for FOXTEL to buy out Austar. This would mean that FOXTEL would have a foot in both regional and metropolitan markets far increasing their revenue.
@NQ resident, no because ONE HD get their feeds from whoever hosts the event in the States. In some cases this is the American (and original) version of SPEED
@Mr Chandler
“full race highlights” – what do you want: the full race replayed or highlights?
i wish they were allowed to show full race highlights of f1 races
More great news for Austar subscribers.
Hi David, I see currently some races (not Indycar) on ONE HD are sourced from the SPEED channel. Does that mean ONE HD will have access to show some or all the the Indycar?
@ David – You forgot to mention that ESPN was expected to get it which has Austar subscribers excited to have some motorsports on their pay TV service, and with SPEED getting the rights the outrage has only increased.
Josh: thanks for extra info.
