UKTV to fast-track Torchwood: Miracle Day

For the second time, UKTV will fast-track a new series of Torchwood to Australian audiences.

UKTV will fast-track the next series of Torchwood to Australian audiences.

It will air in July, immediately following its global premiere on Starz.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is built around one day; a day when nobody in the world dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next. The result: a population boom, overnight.

The 10-episode instalment is a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US Pay-TV network, Starz Entertainment. Creator Russell T. Davies heads up the writing team.

The series will feature locations in the US and around the world.

John Barrowman and Eve Myles return as Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, and will be joined by Mekhi Phifer (ER, Lie to Me) in the role of Rex Matheson, a C.I.A operative who joins the flight against a conspiracy that reaches from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai.

Bill Pullman (While You Were Sleeping, Independence Day) will appear as Oswald Danes, a convicted child killer who survives his own execution to become the most infamous man on the planet.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is a courageous and exciting piece of drama which will resonate with audiences all over the world” said Jana Bennett from BBC Worldwide.

“I’m genuinely delighted that Torchwood will add to UKTV’s compelling selection of first-run drama in 2011.”

Julie Dowding, from BBC Worldwide Australia added, “Torchwood: Miracle Day is set to be one of the most exciting dramas we’ve brought to Australia this year.

“UKTV audiences and Torchwood fans alike are in for a huge treat with this latest chapter from Captain Jack and the team.”

This is the second time UKTV has fast-tracked Torchwood to Aussie audiences. In 2009 it played Torchwood: Children of Earth within 24 hours of its UK premiere.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is expected to premiere on Starz on July 8th.

  1. Ugh. I’d rather poke my eyes out with pointy sticks after plot hole ridden misery fest that was Children of Earth. Why on earth do these writers of campy, fun sci fi suddenly believe they can write Srz Drma? The same self deluding hubris killed the Stargate franchise and it looks like Torchwood will be next. Thank goodness Doctor Who is in the safe hands of very talented Steven Moffat!

  2. What a shame that’s hair washing day. I’d rather stick hot pokers in my eyes than watch this drivel they’re trying to pass off as Torchwood. Give me Ianto, Tosh, Owen, the Rift, the SUV and Wales, not this poor fascimile of a once quirky and unique sci fi show!

  3. @Jack!

how do you figure that FTA is where it should be? it is produced by the bbc, and uktv is bbc’s drama channel in australia. it is exactly where it belongs. i think fta networks are more than welcome to broadcast it if they stump up the cash, but uktv first, not least because at least people will see it in high-definition then.

those wanting something for nothing can get it when it is given to them.

  4. @Steve: Jack and Gwen are still there, also Reese and policeman Andy (in some bits) …
    Wasn’t Torchwood around before Supernatural????
I am sure that, when it airs, it will be Very Torchwood and not look at all like a copy of all that American crap! They always do it better in Wales!!!

It is good to see that there is now a much greater acceptance of UK classics in the US because of their quality.

  5. “…Captain Jack and the team.”

Er… what team? There’s no one left. Actually, there’s No Torchwood left.

They should be honest and drop the name as this is not Torchwood but rather an americanized mishmash with the obligatory CIA agents and paedophiles and mafia bosses and explosions and stolen plots (the no one dies trope has been done before by Supernatural and even The Family Guy).

I guess they like to keep using the franchise to lure gullible fans into watching this wannabe-American garbage. Sigh.

  6. Will it eventually air on ABC2? I guess there’s the DVDs/Blu-Rays for the rest of us if not; assuming people are willing to pay for them. Thanks David for the news.

  7. Much better if the FTA could do it (ABC might with Doctor Who) but I’ll take Torchwood on UKTV!

Right now on UKTV they are airing the full version of Collision, previous ABC aired the cut down one 2 x 90 mins.
