Alec Baldwin: 30 Rock ending in 2012

Update: Alec Baldwin says 30 Rock will come to an end in 2012, but NBC doesn't quite agree.

Alec Baldwin says 30 Rock will come to an end in 2012, which is probably time to wrap it up anyway.

Baldwin, who has previously revealed that he plans to leave after the sixth season, now says the series itself will finish then.

“I will tell you one thing. And that is our show next year is our last year of the show,” he told New York Magazine.

“Our contracts are expired [in 2012] and Tina [Fey] is going to have a big career directing films and writing. She’s going to be the next Elaine May. She’ll be great.”

It may also end the acting career for Baldwin who has spoken about pursuing a political careeer.

Meanwhile Fey says playing Sarah Palin may have impacted on the show’s audience and made it harder to gain traction.

“Some may argue that exploiting Governor Palin and her family helped bring attention to my low-rated TV show,” Fey writes in her new book, Bossypants.

“I am proud to say you are wrong. My TV show still enjoys very low ratings. In fact, I think the Palin stuff may have hurt the TV show. Let’s face it, between Alec Baldwin and me there is a certain fifty percent of the population who think we are pinko Commie monsters.”

You mean they’re not?

Update: An NBC insider tells TV Line, “We have had no conversations about 30 Rock ending next season.”

  1. I just read that Tina Fey is pregnant with her 2nd child so this may affect her tv commitments.

Didnt she do her sarah palin thing on snl not 30 rock. Her sarah palin impersnations are really funny and we needs someone to make fun of her in the 2012 election.

  2. @Jerome. The show’s ratings recently slid further because it was moved back to a 10pm timeslot. Nevertheless, I’d be surprised if NBC would want to let go of 30 Rock just yet. The show’s overall ratings aren’t spectacular, but it’s demographics are pretty desirable for a network lacking big hits.

  3. Six seasons seems about right. The fourth and especially the fifth seasons have dipped in quality, so finishing after number six will probably see them conclude before the show becomes actively bad.

A lot of the characters – particularly Kenneth – have become parodies of themselves. That said, it is impressive that the two lead charatcers, Liz and Jack, remain as fun as ever. Anyways, so long as they can fit in more Dr Spaceman before they bow out, I’m happy.

  4. Shame. It seems quirky or odd-ball comedy doesn’t resonate with the majority of people, altho’ we wouldn’t really know for sure here in Oz ‘cos it’s never been on at a decent time. I really liked “Arrested Development” too.

  5. Baldwin was probably mouthing off. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing out of the Father Of The Year’s mouth was, “….and I’ve got the lead in the new Jack Ryan movie”.

  6. The ratings in the US have never been good but lately have been getting very bad despite no significant decline in quality. They would probably be axed around then anyway so a good decision to get ahead of the ball should allow them to leave the building through the front door.

  7. Bugger.
I only like two shows on TV, ’30 Rock’ and ‘QI’, so this will halve my TV viewing time. It sucks to be in a demographic no one cares about!

  8. finishing in 2012 will mean Tina will be free to return to SNL in time for the 2012 presidential election and able to make fun of Palin again!
