Charges against Matthew Newton dropped

AVO charges against actor Matthew Newton were dismissed in a Sydney Court after his solicitor submitted a psychiatric report.

Charges against actor Matthew Newton were dismissed in a Sydney Court today after his solicitor submitted a psychiatric report detailing complex disorders and a treatment plan.

Newton had been charged him with breaching an AVO granted to his ex-fiance Rachael Taylor last year.

The court heard today he is suffering from bipolar depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety.

Newton, 34, has agreed to continue treatment and take medication for his mental illness. He has spent the past 63 days as a voluntary patient at Northside West clinic.

Magistrate Anthony Townsden granted the application but warned that if he failed to obey the directions of his psychiatrist, he could face criminal action over his AVO breach.

Newton landed back in the headlines last year when a meltdown in Rome with Taylor saw him dumped from the hosting job of The X Factor just days before its premiere.

Newton’s mother Patti attended the hearing to support her son.
