Dame Edna joins Nine’s Royal Wedding team

Lookout possums, Dame Edna is ready to take on the royal nuptials, as only she can.

Dame Edna has joined Nine’s coverage of the Royal Wedding -a nice touch.

She’ll be appearing in the broadcast that will be hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson on April 29th.

Expect lots of gags about her own unmarried son Kenny and partner Clifford Smale -both of whom are still searching for “Miss Right.”

Nine’s coverage will include:
* Pete Stefanovic will be filing stories for Nine News all week.
* Mark Burrows will be there from Tuesday onwards, filing stories for Nine News.
* Sarah Harris will be there from Wednesday onwards, filing stories for Nine News.
* Melissa Downes from QTQ will also be there, filing stories for Nine News.
* The entire Today Show on-air team will be there all week – broadcasting from Buckingham Palace.
* Tracy Grimshaw and Leila McKinnon will be broadcasting from London all week for A Current Affair. Ita Buttrose will be co-hosting ACA all week with Tracy.
* Kerri-Anne Kennerley will present her show from various locations across London all week leading up the wedding day.
* Karl Stefanovic , Lisa Wilkinson and Dame Edna Everage will present the wedding coverage itself, immediately following ACA on the Friday night.

  1. Pom here.

I would quite like to fly half way around the planet to get away from this wedding, but it seems there is no escape. The media is in full spew. BBC One will be airing coverage from eight in the morning to ten at night. The newspapers and other broadcasters are just as bad. Apparently NBC from America are sending over a staff of 500 for their coverage. The world has gone mad.

If I had to watch royal wedding coverage, I think Dame Edna would liven it up brilliantly. It’s a shame we can’t get 9 here. Hers is just the right attitude to have towards the whole ridiculous pantomime. I think it will be entertaining.

  2. This is Fantastic news!
I hope that 9News offers a link that will allow those of us in Colorado to keep up with Dame Edna’s pronouncements on the event that seems to receive inexhaustible coverage from the media, despite a marked lack of public interest in this former colony.

  3. Are Nine really that far out of touch with 2011 that they think Dame Edna is still relevant?

Then again it’s the same network that thought Hey, Hey could work in 2010.

  4. I wasn’t planning on watching the Wedding, but I will be watching Nine for Dame Edna’s input, can’t get enough of her. I wish she was hosting the Logies too, in past years her special appearances have been very well received.

  5. Lighten up, everyone. Back in the day, Dame Edna was a huge part of Nine’s coverage of Fergie and Prince Andrew’s wedding (she was perched on top of a London bus), and Fergie was so excited when she looked up and saw her, that she gave Dame Edna a wave from the horse drawn carriage on the way back from the Abbey to Buckingham Palace.

It’s nothing more than a celebrity showbiz event, so why not give the coverage some celebrity and showbiz?

  6. I don’t think that is a smart idea. She is mroe popular outside Aus that inside (in my opinion). I’ll be flicking between ABC and Seven based on that.

  7. The ABC are definitely taking the Royal Wedding seriously. I heard on the radio news that they’re using Germaine Greer as commentator on Radio National.

I am grateful I’m not interested in the Royal Wedding. I have a friend who is an avid Royal-watcher as they say, and she’s spewing. Her choice is Nine’s stupidity, Seven’s idiocy, or ABC’s whinging out-of-touch man-hater Greer.

  8. @goffy – yeah! More respect for the Royals – those wealthy people that live in big castles and amuse us with weekly relationship scandals – is definitely required. Up there with the Kardashians and the Osbourne’s, surely a worthy commentator would be Baby John Burgess on 7?

  9. so thats two of the major networks not taking the wedding seriously. why is Dame edna, who is a Character, doing the wedding? its Almost as laughable as Fitzy for channel 10.

Here’s hoping channel 7 have a bit more respect for the royals….

  10. ITA – do they really have to have their watermark across the scene like that, really like Seven would be steeling this footage from Nine?

I won’t be watching, might just catch the highlights on SkyNews.

  11. Do 9News just plaster that hideous watermark on every single footage. They did it to the McFadden story which was pointless because that wasn’t even news. Nothing to be proud about if you think an exclusive is Dame Edna talking about the royal wedding. Sigh. ‘Journalism’.
