Eddie so Perfect

Eddie Perfect's musical love-letter to the suburb of Mentone is just perfect.

On Sunday night there really isn’t anywhere else you should be looking except at the ABC.

Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo is terrific at 8:30pm on ABC1, but on ABC2 there is ABC2 Live presents Eddie Perfect from 8pm.

Many would have seen Perfect performing his original songs on Offspring, or his work on Shane Warne The Musical. Now it’s an entire concert with the Brodsky Quartet, who have performed with Elvis Costello, Bjork and Paul McCartney.

Although this isn’t actually live (so no Minchin-like audio problems) it’s a treat.

The entire concert features songs Perfect has written about his childhood suburb, Mentone, a very unassuming seaside suburb planted between Frankston and Melbourne.

Perfect reckons he overlooked the place in his youth and it wasn’t until his adult years that he took a closer look. He has composed songs about the characters, the local shops, his childhood sweetheart (who else can sing about a girl and sewerage in the same verse?), and even a song about the road that lead him away but eventually brought him back. “What’s the Point Nepean?” he asks.

Performed at the inaugural Melbourne Cabaret Festival, this broadcaster at South Melbourne Town Hall is introduced by Myf Warhurst.

Set your PVR. Perfect is just perfect.

ABC2 Live presents Eddie Perfect 8pm Sunday on ABC2.

  1. Talking about Offspring, they were filming yesterday right near my uni in George St., Melbourne. It was a closed set it must of been one of the scenes where the characters have sex but that doesn’t narrow it down.

  2. In case you were wondering, I’ve never heard of Mentone before so I may well be educated by this. I like Eddie Perfect but incredibly dislike Offspring.

  3. In case you are wondering, I have read most of your articles in that unassuming suburb whilst bored at the same high school Eddie went to. He was Dux in 1996.

I’ll be watching and so will my Nan and Pop – they are his #1 fans.
