Hoover spearheads “Save our Soaps” campaign

A US advertiser has mounted a campaign to save daytime soaps from being axed. And it's even pulling network ads.

Now here’s a surprise.

After ABC (US) announced it was cancelling its long-running daytime soaps One Life to Live and All My Children, a network advertiser has mounted a campaign to save them.

And it’s even pulling ads from the network.

Usually it’s viewers threatening to boycott a network or its advertisers.

Brian Kirkendall, Vice President of Marketing at Hoover has posted a letter on the company’s Facebook page.

“I want you to know from me personally that we hear you loud and clear. My wife and mother are both passionate viewers of All My Children and One Life to Live, as are many of my colleagues here at Hoover. We were and are as disappointed with this news as you are.

“In fact, we will discontinue our advertising with ABC this Friday, 4/22. We’re making every attempt to pull our spots from these programs sooner.”

They have also called on soapie fans to send them letters of support.

“Please, send your emails to us at [email protected], and we’ll get every, single last one of them to ABC.

“We’re 150% committed to doing what matters most to you – so if there’s anything else we can do to help or you have any ideas, please email this address, and we will respond to you personally.”

That’s dedication.

  1. I grew up watching All My Children , One Life To Live and General Hospital and I am so sickened by this decision . The “chew” and other shows that will be aired will definately not be on my television ! I hope their ship sinks along with ABC executives who took part in this decision !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I’ve been watching All My Children since 1970. That’s the year I got married and left home. I started watching it during my lunch breaks from work. Loosing it now is like loosing a good friend. My daughter and I both watch, and try to predict what’s going to happen next. I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting the writers scenarios. Not always right, but close.
Please don’t take it off. I’ll miss it terribly!

  3. Thank Hoover for pulling your ads from abc.My mother and i watch both soaps everyday. My mother has been watching for about 35 years and I have been watching for 10 years. We would be devestated if something happened to our favorite shows. Why would abc even think of doing something like this, its dumb serously. Who is actually going to watch another health and fitness show. If they don’t already watch it now on another channel. Why would they start on abc? There will be no point in watching abc after they take the shows off. We have already boycotted abc. Thanks.

  4. I think this is great that Hoover is pulling their ads. ABC should know that if the millions of fans are not watching their channel that advertisers will not be their to help fund their network! Great Job Hoover. ABC should rethink their position. I believe that More advertisers should give notice to ABC that should the soaps be pulled they will not advertise w/them.
