Jerry Seinfeld calls the Royal Wedding “a circus act”

Jerry Seinfeld says the Royal Family is a huge game of pretend because the Brits love to dress up wth a sense of theatre.

And what’s the deal with the Royal Wedding, eh Jerry?

Jerry Seinfeld called the Royal Wedding a circus act when he was interviewed in New York for ITV’s Daybreak when promoting his upcoming performance at London’s O2 Arena.

Asked is he was excited about the wedding he replied sarcastically, “Yes, I’m very excited. Well it’s a circus act, it’s an absurd act.

“You know, it’s a dress-up. It’s a classic English thing of let’s play dress-up. Let’s pretend that these are special people. OK, we’ll all pretend that – that’s what theatre is,’ he continued.

“That’s why the British have the greatest theatre in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend.

“And that’s what the Royal Family is – it’s a huge game of pretend. These aren’t special people – it’s fake outfits, fake phoney hats and gowns.

“It’s fantastic. We don’t have anything like that.”

Well, except an entire town named Hollywood, perhaps…

How well his comments will go down remains to be seen.

Daybreak hosts Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles appeared taken aback, Bleakley joking, “How dare he!”

Chiles appeared very offended by Seinfeld‘s opinion: “I’ll join in on any of that stuff, if it’s a Brit doing it. But I can’t bear Americans criticising the Royal family. It turns me into a Royalist!”

“He’ll be doing that show from the Tower of London, never mind the O2.”

Yada, yada, yada….

  1. It sounds like he’s jealous …
After all, it is a real wedding …
Forget the media part of it … it’s real.
Jealous much of the media attention, Jerry????

  2. Wow I’m not a fan of Seinfield. But he’s clearly right it IS a circus act and a Circus act it shall ever be.

Hearing about it everyday, every hour…..On magazines, Television, internet. Even worse than Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (And that annoys the crap out of me.)

What they want to do in their personal lives.

And these people don’t even run the country as much anymore! The only good thing they do is charity Good on them for that. But it’s hypocritical when they go to other country Disaster zones with the countries tax payers money to get them there. (Same with Oprah)

They even sell royal wedding condoms now….Dolls. masks, millions of accessories based on them. Up to point that it’s really scary…..

Don’t forget Britain you asked for his opinion he gave it to suck it up. Not everyone is truly excited for the wedding.

  3. Lots of people making a big fuss over a tongue in cheek response which no one can deny there are absurd levels of interest and more pomp and ceremony than ever witnessed.

  4. Some really disappointing comments here. How dare an *American* have an opinion on an over-blown British event! As the good Doctor Ry said, he was asked a question & he answered it.

DF, do you remember this kind of media feeding frenzy in the lead up to Seinfeld filming those Greater Building Society ads? It’s hardly the same thing, huh? Does the British taxpayer fund those Greater Building Society ads? But they’re funding this upcoming circus.

  5. Agree kind of agree with Jerry on this one. The Royal family just is not in touch with current society. In my opinion they are irrelevant in saying that he shouldnt have critisised the Royal Family or the upcoming wedding, i think he wont be comming back to England or Britain any time soon. In my personal opinion the reason why the english are so smitten with the Royal Family is for the same reason why they are smitten with the celebrities. Its the fact that they want to be like them and have their lives its envy thats all it is, it is a distraction from their own problems in life.@ Jason D. Totally agree with you the Royal Family is completely theatrical and in most cases good for a laugh. The reaction to Jerry’s comments by the hosts clearly shows how stuffy the British are they clearly have no lives of their own, they clearly obsess to much about this Family.

  6. @ david s – agree completely, the way the media is going crazy over this wedding is borderline insane..literally. I do like PW he seems like an ok guy but please not all of us care about his upcoming marriage. I heard Kate called a “commoner”the other day – I love britain but the class system makes me sick.

  7. So what do you call his advertisements for the Greater Building Society? One has him wrestling a pretend croc, one has him pretend surfing chasing customers who only don’t have a 100% satisfaction rating with the bank enticing them with wallpaper swatches. Seems his attitude could be bought if you pay him enough money.

  8. He’s right in the sense that the royal family is merely involved in theatrics, considering that they are endowed of the position by patrimony rather than qualifications. However, it can also be seen as tradition to maintain the royal family. I can see how some can be offended by someone mocking the tradition of the royal family, however, Seinfeld is probably correct in his thoughts about the royal wedding.

  9. I’m quite pro the Royal family, but in all fairness here, they asked for Seinfeld’s opinion. If they didn’t want it, they shouldn’t have asked for it, and he’s more than entitled to his own opinion.

And frankly circus act is not entirely unfair – in a country that spends every election fighting about whether to be a republic or not, the television channels couldn’t wait to jump on the Royal Wedding bandwagon.

Seinfeld’s entitled to his opinion. Don’t ask questions you may not like the answer to…

  10. The truth hurts, eh? God, if hear or see another story on the upcoming nuptials of these two utterly insignificant and forgettable people I’ll scream.

I can’t wait for the legions of now-simpering tabloid hacks to get out their knives and start tearing them down again in a year or two – rumours of discord, arguments about her “shopping mania”, stories of palace intrigue, his and/or her infidelity, it’ll all be grist for the mill before you know it.

Let it all be over soon, I can’t stand it any longer.

  11. Woah major bug up his a**, why does it matter to him that’s what the interesting part. Must be angry he didn’t get an honorary OBE or CBE in the New Years Honours List.

I’d sooner take the so called “theatrics” of the Royal Family over the “theatrics” of the Hollywood Family anyday.
