Kerry, Jonathan & Tony make way for Paper Giants

Kerry O'Brien, Jonathan Holmes and Tony Jones all get the night off as ABC1 makes room for Part 2 of its Cleo miniseries.

In case you hadn’t noticed next week ABC1 will suspend its usual Monday night line-up to make way for the second half of Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo. Part 1 airs at 8:30pm on Sunday.

That means Four Corners, Media Watch and Q & A will not air (what will Twitter do without #qanda?) -and no they won’t run on ABC News 24 either.

It’s an extremely rare programming move by ABC1 but that said, the ABC1 thinking audience will probably be drawn to the 2 part miniseries.

All three shows will resume on April 25.

Maybe Kerry O’Brien, Jonathan Holmes and Tony Jones can all go out for a taco night and a bit of pub trivia next week?

  1. Loved Paper Giants. Surely we could do without our regular Monday night diet to make way for this fantastic true Aussie story. My daughter is the exactly same age I was at the time. Made her think that maybe we weren’t all old fogies. Big problem for me though! Won’t be home Monday evening as at the Easter Show! With all those other channels hope it will be repeated.

  2. Does this mean all the programs being bumped onthe night will now be on for an extra week at the end of the year when most ABC produced programs go on inordinatly long summer holidays from early November so as to make up for this programming masterstroke? Paper Giants should be on consecutive Sunday nights, the traditional darma timeslot.

  3. Love the 8c a day comment, David. Is it still 8c – and has it gone up or down with the parity of the dollar? Anyway, Frankie is right, it was Bastard Boys that they last switched the Monday line up mid season. I was working on Mediawatch at the time, and of course for various staff – it meant some days off! It is school holidays, non ratings – so one could interpret the scheduling as a back handed compliment for Paper Giants – non ratings slots for it. But being the ABC, they are throwing a lot at this mini series, and it is a huge compliment to it, to kick out the flagship programs. Ita Buttrose is such a signinficant pioneer in the media in this country, and her relationship with Australia’s late rich mogul was a fascinating one. This drama looks most compelling. I hope it yields a great response.

  4. Well I won’t be watching. When I would of watched Q&A live; and Four Corners plus Media Watch in a repeat. I would of watched Paper Giants if they had of played them in back to back Sunday nights. I guess I better hope they repeat it sensibly one day and I can catch it. By the way it’s not due to hating this move. Although I really don’t like it. But because Eleven finally will start playing the Sixth Season of Supernatural. I’ve never been able to tape the ABC this century. So that option is out. Not that it worries me too much. It might rate alright but I think it would of been better on two Sundays. Oh well.

  5. I agree with some of the comments here. ABC1 have gone nuts! Couldn’t Cleo run over two Sunday nights, or Sunday & Tuesday? They’ve left Australia Network high-&-dry without Q&A too.

PS: SBS One are doing the same thing with Dateline. It’s not on this Sunday too. 🙁

  6. Isn’t the reason for having the other digital channels are so they could move things on. Media Watch and Q&A are the 2 most popular shows on monday night, surely they could move them to ABC2, News24 or heck, even ABC3 for the night.

  7. David, when you said “and no they won’t run on ABC News 24 either” my initial thought was you were clarifying that ‘Paper Giants’ won’t be simulcast on ABCNews24. Obviously that’s not what you meant. But imagine if ABC News 24 suddenly made an unexpected switch that night at 9.35pm AEST to a live simulcast of ‘Paper Giants’ on ABC1?
