Paper Giants set to boost Asher Keddie’s Logie run

Asher Keddie and Paper Giants were the toast of Twitter last night, no doubt bolstering her race for the Gold Logie.

Last night’s screening of Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo has no doubt boosted Asher Keddie’s dark horse race for the Gold Logie.

Keddie’s performance and the entire mini-series, were the toast of Twitter last night with both #papergiants and ‘Asher Keddie’ trending nationally.

Tweets were praising her spot-on performance as a young Ita Buttrose along with the ABC production.

Great episode of #papergiants! Ita Buttrose and Kerry Packer played wonderfully. Hopefully some more nude, 1970s male centrefolds tomorrow.

Tonight’s episode continues the tale, with more from Kerry Packer, the rise of Whitlam, a young Germaine Greer, a young Barry Humphries and threats upon Buttrose’s life.

  1. It is fascinating to me to read the comments because Paper Giants bought back so many memories of the 70,s era re- fashion / hairdoes / open smoking / sexism / the W.E.L movement / & so many other reminders. I watched both episodes & at the end – was sad that the story didn,t continue. What an amazing story Ms. Buttrose has to tell . Congrats to the A.B.C. & all involved for a most enthralling program & I totally agree with previous comments that such stories in the future would be of great interest to a wide audience.

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed this, Keddie is an amazing talent but i fear she will be snapped up by a Hollywood studio soon so enjoy her work while you can. Also kudos to the production team for convincingly recreating the seventies complete with bad fashion, chain smoking & sexist attitudes, i can just remember it, unfortunately. No really revisiting it is fun at times, theres also Twister, Suzi Quatro & Big M girl calenders :).

It made a nice change to see docu drama not revolving around a crime storyline, this was at once educational for those who were not around then to see what life was like back then & it was bloody funny, the Jack Thompson scene was a classic.

  3. Asher Keddie did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Ita Buttrose in this easy to watch mini-series. Certainly one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable shows on television so far this year, it will certainly boost Ms Keddie’s Gold Logie chances. And for anyone who lived during the mid-1970’s the show captured the times accurately enough to transport you back there for an hour or so each episode. More shows like this please!

  4. @Ronnie – I wonder if it would have done as well on Nine. This type of historical drama doesn’t have enough mayhem and gratuitous titties for their usual demographic. Plus, how many of us who did watch it last night would have chosen not to on Nine in case they butchered it?

It’s on iView for those who missed it.

  5. Paper Giants & Asher = Genius.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I have not even got through the first hour yet! Thank goodness I sacrificed H50 for it.

Even more surprising was the fact my boyfriend was completely enthralled in it as well, I thought it would be a ‘female’ show but I was completely wrong and glad of it!!

Well done John Edwards as well.
