2.22m for State of Origin

Nine scored on Wednesday night (as if there was any doubt) with a huge audience of 2.2m viewers for the State of Origin match between Queensland and NSW.

The match saw Queensland’s Maroons defeat NSW’s Blues 16 to 12. In Sydney the game pulled 1.05m viewers, with 820,000 in Brisbane, and 296,000 viewers in Melbourne.

The game blew the competition out of the water with Australia’s Got Talent dropping to 1.28m viewers, 423,000 of whom were in Melbourne, and MasterChef Australia on 1.23m which won in Melbourne on 501,000. But AGT won in Adelaide and Perth.

Almost every other show last night took a hit due to the State of Origin.

The Oprah Winfrey Show primetime special pulled 1.00m viewers over Angry Boys (805,000), Criminal Minds (642,000) and East West 101 (181,000).

Elsewhere last night Spicks and Specks was 729,000, The New Inventors was 365,000 and Hungry Beast was 360,000.

Home And Away (1.13m) bettered ABC News (895,000) and The 7pm Project (826,000).

  1. What a shame that CSI Miami is given precedence over an epic match of rugby in SA. Even if Rugby is not high on the priorities for this Australian state, surely the fact that this is a sporting mad nation would warrant free-to-air showing the match at a reasonable hour mid-week. SA cant even get its favourite sport Aussie rules shown without a delay, at least I got to hear it on the radio, not the same though is it!

  2. I should had … I have spoken with many people about Channel 9’s neglect of the State of Origin in Adelaide and am pleasently surprised by the number of AFL people who have said they would watch it.

One year Channel 9 had the cheek to play a celebirty AFL game at the same time as the Origin … are they really interested in league … I think not!

  3. I am with MS! Channel 9 in Adelaide is a joke … this my 4th year of no live State of Origin. I even wrote to my local member about it … I am wild!

As AFL attacks league heartland in Western Sydney, Channel 9 does nothing to expose league in SA.

Between 9, Foxtel and all the digital channels one of the highest rating programs in Sydney and Melbourne is not shown.

I think Mr D Gallop needs to have a stern word with them.

  4. I bet if State of Origin was shown live around the nation then it would have gotten much higher figures. The nine network have really done themselves no favours by delaying the match by three hours in the central and west of australia.

  5. While here in Adelaide we watched David Attenborough and his dung Camera spy on a herd of elephants.

I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what the Elephants would do next.

  6. Sterling and Warren hardly taking a breath from the commentary into the betting odds really ruins it for me – surely this can’t be in the spirit of the broadcasting act. Not only does it ruin the broadcast, but given time it will ruin the game.

  7. I am mystified as to why Channel 9 Adelaide waited until 10:30 to show this last night. I could be wrong … but all they had on were repeats of CSI.

  8. Can someone explain to me why Channel Nein were advertising Rugby Union during State of Origin, which is Rugby League? Disgraceful and disloyal. I hope Nein have the rights ripped away from them when they come up for renegotiation.

  9. David, what did the shows on GEM rate in Sydney and Brisbane that were on at the same time?

Antiques Roadshow and The World’s Smallest Man and Me

Be interesting to know how many people watched 9’s HD channel that were catered for while sports lovers were dudded.

  10. David – what would be interesting is getting a gauge on what revenue Nine write in to State of Origin. There are very few ad breaks and in addition to the rights fee, is the expensive production. At least with AFL there is an ad break after every goal.

Being a low scoring match didn’t help but curious to know how many ad breaks etc they got away.

  11. I unexpectedly got an invite to see the game at a local cinema, so I saw it there. The only thing better about seeing it at the cinema was the crowd atmosphere there.

  12. Blogger: Not much point trying to compare year on year when the landscape keeps changing so rapidly. But if you click on the show’s Tag you can see several previous stories and numbers.

  13. We Need Network Ten to buy the Free-To-Air NRL Rights from Nine to fix up the Mistakes Nine made with their Rugby League Coverage which began in 1993.

  14. I’m sick of GTV9 cutting the Coverage after the Game to go to a Movie, That’s why Melbourne did’nt get to see the Post Match Presentations Live.

  15. Ch9 do have a problem with this show as they only have 2 more episodes. To ensure the ratings remain strong episode 2 has been scripted so the NSW Blues win leaving a ratings bonanza for the final episode. The result of episode 3 is being kept a closely guarded secret.

Note: Do not forget who sponser and bankrolls the whole of the NRL, and don’t forget who needs a massive ratings boost as they are struggling this year.

  16. Nine better hope the Blues win next week. Without a decider match on 8/7 not as many people in NSW will tune in watch the Blues get thumped.
