ABC2’s Opening Shot for new documentaries

Screen Australia and ABC TV have announced a new initiative for emerging filmmakers to create new documentaries for ABC2.

Screen Australia and ABC TV Documentaries today announced a new initiative for emerging filmmakers to create new documentaries for ABC2.

Opening Shot is a $400,000 initiative that will commission up to six one-off films on contemporary Australian life for prime time TV broadcast.

ABC TV Head of Documentaries Alan Erson says, “ABC TV has a strong track record in spotting and nurturing talent and I look forward to working with the next group of emerging documentary makers on this series. ABC2 offers a great opportunity to curate a cohesive body of work while also allowing documentary makers set the creative agenda.”

Screen Australia’s Documentary Manager Liz Stevens added, “Screen Australia has a strong focus on bringing through the next generation of creative storytellers. We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with the ABC in giving opportunities to young Australian talent to tell contemporary stories in their own voices.”

  1. I like this. This is what ABC2 should be about, Creating a unique presence. It reminds when BBC1 had the Nine O’Clock News and BBC2 had the Not the Nine O’Clock News. ABC2 should have more innovation, and make the most of the channel which it has done recently acquiring The Bazura project and The Mangrook Footy Show.
    The only other digital channel that i can see trying to create an indenity for itself is 7Two, which is clearly targeted at the older, ABC crowd with alot of British shows (its turning into BBC Australia as 7Two snatch the Bill and probably many others from the ABC)
