ASTRA Awards 2011: nominees

Grand Designs Australia, Tangle, Spirited, Camp Orange and SKY News are amongst some of the top nominees for Pay TV's annual awards night.

The Subscription TV industry has announced finalists for its 9th Annual ASTRA Awards, Pay TV’s top awards in Australia.

Dominating the nominees are programmes from the LifeStyle Channel, FOX8, SKY News, FOX Sports and Channel [V].

They include Grand Designs Australia, Tangle, Spirited, Selling Houses Australia, Camp Orange, [V] Guerilla Gigs, Vancouver Olympics and SKY News.

There are 53 finalists in 15 industry voted categories, chosen by television executives who reviewed the entries submitted from Pay TV channels.

This year the finalists in the four Subscriber’s Choice categories will be announced at a special event on the 16th June, but once again the nominees will be chosen by ASTRA and not by viewers, who only vote for the winners from June 21st.

Nominees for the top award, Channel of the Year Award,  will also be announced on June 16.

  1. I thought that Josh Flinn from Australia’s Next Top Model would’ve got a nod for Best New Talent. I’ve never even heard of Peter Maddison?

  2. It’s So Great to see NRL Monday Night Football Nominated for Most Outstanding Sports Program or Coverage. Cmon NRL you Better Win!!!!!!!

  3. Are there no other cable narrative shows other than Tangle and Spirited? Where was the Jesters? Weren’t there some others this past year, or was that it?

  4. Why is Channel V nominated??? I’m at a loss to understand what is so ‘outsanding’ about a bunch of homeless looking 20somethings acting like 14y.olds.

  5. Tim, I agree with most things you said about Sky News although their political team of Speers, Gilbert and Gillon (which the bulk of their nominations came from) are well deserved IMHO as they do a great job producing original content and reports

  6. How can sky news win anything?…they sit around and wait for seven and nine to feed them the pictures then put it to air with their one reporter on the ground talking over it. Never giving any credit to the crews, satellite techs, chopper crews and journos from the Nine or Seven. From memory it took 2 Days for Sky News Australia to get to New Zealand.

Good Luck the weather channel for going out and making original content.
