Athletics World Championships for SBS

The 2011 IAAF World Championships will be coming to SBS TWO in August, with 25 hours live from Korea.

The 2011 IAAF World Championships will be coming to SBS TWO in August, with the network set to screen 25 hours live from Daegu, Korea,  every night of the championships.

SBS will broadcast the Australian Flame as they compete at the 13th instalment of the world track and field titles.

Live coverage on SBS TWO will be accompanied by a further 10 hours of highlights as reigning world champions Dani Samuels and Steve Hooker hunt for consecutive crowns alongside a current Australian Flame team of 30.

The broadcast will be hosted by SBS’s David Basheer with expert commentary from former Australian track star Jane Flemming.

”The IAAF world championships are the jewel in the crown of international athletics and SBS is proud to broadcast extensive coverage live and on free-to-air TV,” Ken Shipp, Head of Sport at SBS, said.

Providing a catalyst for promoting athletics to sports fans across the country, Dallas O’Brien, Chief Executive of Athletics Australia, is excited about the opportunities the coverage deal brings.

“Athletics Australia is thrilled to know that in lounge rooms across Australia athletics and general sports fans alike can be entertained by Australia and the world’s best track and field stars,” O’Brien said.

“On the back of a 20 medal haul at the Commonwealth Games, the Australian Flame will again be looking to stamp their authority on the world stage as we look ahead to the 2012 Australian Athletics Tour and the big show that is the London Olympics.

“We wholeheartedly thank the IAAF and SBS Television for working with us in making this broadcast deal a possibility.”

The broadcast schedule will be announced in the coming months.

  1. U have got 2 B joking. I have waited for 2 years 2 watch these World Champs & SBSTwo shows only 2 of the 7 100m heats!!!

I pray SBS re-jigs their timetable 2 actually show full live coverage (morning sessions included) or else does the decent thing and gives the broadcasting rights to another station.

2 say I’m disappointed is a major understatement

  2. Fantastic of course. I must admit I am fearful that we will be stuck with another atrocious commercial coverage of the Olympics next year.

The effort by Ch 7 last time was absolutely disgraceful. Track and field was all but ignored in live coverage.

  3. Same sentiments. Thank goodness for SBS. Its a pity they get locked out of the Diamond League etc., because if they had something like that then we would have a build up to the Championships. They did it once before with the Golden League and we got to recognise some of the athletes – get a following if you know what I mean.

Nonetheless this is great – take what I can get. I might put in for some leave from work!

  4. Yes i to echo the duel sentiments. Its great to have the Athletics worlds on SBS. This would have been perfect for ONE HD but now its not.
