Dixie Marshall quits Nine News Perth

Nine News presenter Dixie Marshall has quit after 27 years of reporting, to focus on other avenues.

Perth’s Nine News co-presenter Dixie Marshall has quit after 27 years of reporting, to focus on other avenues, tipped to be in the public sector.

Recent disaster news may have been a deciding factor in her decision. She was close to tears a fortnight ago when reading a story about an accidental fire which claimed the lives of Brett Spies, his 16-year-old son Ben and 13-year-old daughter Georgina in Mandurah.

“After more than 25 years as both a reporter and news reader I’ve had enough of reading and reporting stories about tragedy – floods, fire earthquakes and violence,” she said.

“I’m making a strategic career decision to move into another phase which will allow me to participate in the changes happening within our State and city.”

Marshall, who has hosted the nightly news bulletin since 2003, has been a pioneer of the Australian news landscape being the first woman to report sport on television as well as being a part of the first all-women news anchor team with co-host Sonia Vinci throughout 2003.

Nine’s Perth manager Ian McRae said, “I have enormous respect for Dixie.

“She is an outstanding, committed journalist with unbelievable energy.”

At the end of last night’s bulletin, co-host Greg Pearce and sports presenter Michael Thompson paid tribute to Marshall, while weather presenter Angela Tsun handed over a flower bouquet.

A Channel Nine spokeswoman has said there were no plans to replace Marshall.

Greg Pearce will present Nine News solo from today.

  1. Channel 7 in Perth has 2-3 reporters & a weather girl who do fill in newsreading 2 perfection – Channel 9 Poach one of them, update your set & I’m certain your ratings will improve.

  2. Thanks for sharing news about Perth David – much appreciated!

@Louie – I’m from WA and have no idea who the Eastern States 6pm newsreaders are……..and I don’t really care! Strange comment to say no-one in the other states have heard of her – why would you have heard of her???

  3. Dixie really broke ground as a female reporter of AFL football in Melbourne many years ago – She was a breath of fresh air. Here is a report from her time at HSV-7.

  4. As a Perth resident I have quite a lot of respect for Dixie, before 10 came up with their extended bulletin allowing me to watch the headlines at 6, ch 9 was my choice for news because I actually got news – not whatever it is ch 7 serves up to the LCD masses.

Good luck and best wishes to you Dixie 🙂

  5. My greatest memory of Dixie is when she interviewed Bill Duckworth in the Essendon dressing room after a game. She asked him a question about the game and he replied “Who cares, why don’t you come and hop in the shower with me”.

    Classic live TV!!!

  6. @Animal, where does your attitude come from? I’ve never met Dixie but have heard around town that she’s a vibrant, intelligent woman and a consummate professional.

  7. @Louis: She worked in Melbourne for a number of years as a sports reporter for Seven, particularly for VFL/AFL coverage but also reported and covered other sports for Seven, e.g. Olympic Games.
