Exhausted Lisa Wilkinson on doctor’s orders

An exhaustive week for Today co-host Lisa Wilkinson finished with her sent to hospital with chest pains and taking a break on doctors orders.

After the demands of covering the Royal Wedding, rushing to Melbourne and fronting up for the Logie Awards, Wilkinson tells the Sunday Telegraph she began to feel feeling chest pains.

“I started getting chest pains on Sunday and they were getting worse during the Logies. But it was Karl’s night and I was there to celebrate with him so the last thing I was going to do was put my hand up and say, ‘Um, excuse me.’ I thought it was something that would just go away.”

She was taken to hospital mid-week by husband Peter FitzSimons.

“I was tested for absolutely everything, for blood clots and all of those nasty words that you don’t want to hear when you’re having chest pains. I had CAT scans and ECGs. I caught a virus and my immune system was pretty depleted,” she said.

Wilkinson was absent from Today on Thursday and Friday, and describes the experience as ‘a warning shot fired across my bow.’

  1. Lisa, next time you feel chest pains get it checked out straight away . I along with many viewer’s want to see your smiling face for many years to come and I am sure your 3 kid’s want to have mum around also.

  2. Love Lisa – she’s a great personality and a good foil to Karl (who I also really enjoy watching. Amazes me so many people detest him). But what’s with that publicity photo you’ve got attached to the story…is it just me or do those teeth look like they’ve been whited out with liquid paper?!

  3. In the recent excellent mini series “Paper Giants’ Ita Buttrose said “when you work for the Packers they own you.” It looks like after all these years nothing has changed in TV land.

  4. I am delighted to see Lisa back at the desk today. Thanks Vicki for your comment.
Lisa Wilkinson is one classy lady. I left a comment a few weeks ago for her, after Karl received the dual Logie nominations, commending her on her warmth and presence, and within the shortest of durations left me a charming email reply.
TV may be all about smoke and mirrors, but few presenters that work as hard as she does, behave with the dignity that this lady does. We know nothing about her state of health, so it is great to see that she is weathering what has ailed her.

  5. @daveinprogress, well said! Lisa and Georgie are the best things about Today.

I’m even a little bit impressed that Nine has the guts to have them both co-host together occasionally when Karl is absent, rather than just go the obvious man/woman combo.

  6. Reading some of the comments on news.com.au, some people really disgust me.

Going on about her cushy job and how she’s not stressed at all, people must be really dumb to think these guys just turn up at 5:30am go to air and go home at 9am when the show is done.

They get up at an ungodly hour of 3:30am every morning, have to read their scripts and prepare the show for that morning and then after the show go back to their office for more work.

They work normal hours just like the rest of us, actually they probably do overtime.

  7. I wonder if her absence affected the ratings on Thursday and Friday. Surely no one watches to see Karl. The guy is a plank and a plonk!

  8. The paper today claims that she’s ignoring doctor’s orders and returning to work next week, so I’m sorry, but she’s not entitled to our sympathy.

  9. I hope to see her lovely smiling face and warm presence back on the air very soon. She is the rock of that program along with Georgie Gardener, the two women are both intelligent, respectful and fun to watch. I wish Lisa all the best!
