Hamish Blake tops the Q Scores

Hamish Blake is the most popular personality on television according to recent Q Score results, and Sam Newman tops the most unpopular rankings.

Hamish Blake is the most popular personality on television according to recent Q Score results.

The data, complied by Audience Development Australia, is based on extensive research with audiences that combines a recognition factor, and positive or negative feedback.

Blake, who has appeared in a number of light entertainment vehicles, scored a high 29% Q Score, ahead of Andrew Denton on 27% and Rebecca Gibney on 26%.

The data is used by television networks in conjunction with their own anecdotal evidence, including TV ratings, when it comes to casting and developing projects.

It contrasts with some Logie results. Gold Logie winner Karl Stefanovic ranks #135 of 250 personalities.

The results have been published for the first time by The Australian.

The Top 25 are:
1. Hamish Blake
2. Andrew Denton
3. Rebecca Gibney
4. Michael Caton
5. John Clarke
6. Ernie Dingo
7. Toni Collette
8. Jennifer Hawkins
9. Adam Hills
10. Magda Szubanski
11. Shaun Micallef
12. Dr. Harry Cooper
13. Andy Lee
14. Ahn Do
15. Dave Hughes
16. Rove McManus
17. Shane Bourne
18. Adam Gilchrist
19. Scott Cam
20. Megan Gale
21. Paul McDermott
22. Sigrid Thornton
23. Grant Denyer
24. Noni Hazlehurst
25. Amanda Keller

Leading the Negative results were
66% Sam Newman
50% Eddie McGuire
43% Daryl Somers
41% Matthew Johns
40% Bert Newton
40% Ian Dickson
39% Paul Vautin
39% Dermott Brereton
38% Peter Everett
37% Trevor Marmalade
36% Paul Fenech
36% Andrew G
36% Matt Preston
35% David Koch
33% Molly Meldrum
33% Iain Hewitson
33% Ryan Fitzgerald
32% Andrew O’Keefe
32% Ian Thorpe

The top female in the Negative rankings was Kerry-Anne Kennerley on 41%.

But the data is no certainty when it comes to casting.

Nine’s new Between the Lines features Eddie McGuire, Ryan Fitzgerald and Mick Molloy -all of whom ranked 30% or over in Negative data. Similarly several of the Top 10 are without a regular on-air TV gig: Andrew Denton, Ernie Dingo, Jennifer Hawkins and Magda Szubanski.

One publicist tells The Australian, “A Q Score measures that intangible something about celebrities that makes them loved and trusted. That’s where Karl falls down — people might like him but they probably don’t trust him like they would trust a Magda Szubanski (10) or an Andrew Denton.”

Seven drama exec Bevan Lee says, “I’m a great believer in ‘the show makes the star rather than the star makes the show.”

  1. If you have a look at the document – the list was from April ’10 – these results are over a year old!

Why is this making news today?

  2. I’ve always wanted to read the Q scores. David do you know how it works? Do networks request that certain people are tested or does the company randomly choose. I would be surprised in SBS cared what Anton Enis got or the ABC for that matter. They have in the past been quite guarded about the results getting out from my understanding. There are obviously large numbers of high profile people missing from the list.

  3. It would be interesting to know how they arrive at these scores but I imagine it’s a guarded secret.
Stands to reason to see over exposed people on the bottom of the list. (Eddie!)

  4. Is it just me, or is Kyle Sandilands missing from the list? It must be a glitch? Not many would like him, but he is well-known.

  5. Note to TV execs….look who is at number 6 and has hardly been seen in the last year. Sign him up and give him a show now, he is very watchable.

As for the other stuff Hamish & anonymous are very popular, but they will burn out within 2 years cos they signed for 9 and will suffer overkill. The bottom 25 seems very sexist…only blokes?

Can’t believe eddie is so unpopular given his exposure….ha ha ha

  6. Wow, this is interesting. I like Hamish, but it is surpising he tops the list. Also interesting is that many of those leading the negative list are from Nine.

  7. You have got to be kidding me – Hamish Blake with the highest “Q” score on Australian TV. More than Rebecca Gibney??? Huh??? The whole Hamish and Andy phenomenon goes over my head, i don’t find them very amusing at all. The full list makes for very interesting reading. Manu Fieldel’s star is certainly on the ascent, I note he is number 30 out of 250, miles ahead of either Gary Mehigan or George Calombaris. Australia certainly loves him, that’s for sure. Not a lot of surprises in the negative Q factor list, I dislike most of the celebrities listed.
