Oprah necklaces begin arriving, but wait there’s more…

Diamond necklaces have begun winding their way to fans of Oprah Winfrey. But some still aren't happy.

Diamond necklaces given to audience members from Oprah Winfrey‘s Sydney show are valued at $405 but some fans aren’t happy, complaining they are too small.

The complaints follow stories last week that the necklaces had not yet arrived, but have since started turning up.

Patrons received a silver-chained O pendant featuring seven “tiny” diamonds courtesy of Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine.

“I finally got it yesterday after six months wait,” one reader told News Limited. “And I can’t see any diamonds on it but other than that it looks like a cheap piece of costume jewellery.

“They call it a ‘special edition’, but really there’s nothing special about it. I’m really disappointed.”

But a spokesperson for Harpo Productions said the necklace’s were Rio Tinto’s responsibility.

A spokeswoman for Rio Tinto said confusion had been created after a $7000 diamond encrusted necklace was mistaken for what was always planned.

“What has been delivered is what we promised and while there has been negative feedback based on false expectations we have also had a lot of extremely positive feedback,” she said.

The negative Winfrey story comes just two weeks before her final show in the US.

Some US media also picked up the diamond necklace story last week.

  1. Sadly, the same thing happened when Oprah’s entire audience were given a car. Quite a few people complained that they had to pay stamp duty (or something similar) which was a couple of hundred dollars. Harpo was swamped with people asking for the ‘extra’ money to cover their expense.
Harpo’s response was quite rightly, they didn’t have to accept the car if they didn’t want it. I remember at the time Oprah saying that she was disappointed that people didn’t seem to be grateful in the face of such a generous gift.
Now this handful of of Aussie ingrates are making Australian’s look equally as bad 🙁

  2. Any chance someone could email a link to this page to Oprah’s team, just to prove we’re all not a bunch of complaining colonials?

This whole thing is an embarrassing reflection of Australia and its people.

  3. How ungrateful are people in todays world. There are many bigger problems that each of us encounter each day yet these materialistic selfish scum complain about receiving a Free gift.

  4. These people complaining about the necklaces need a reality check and a good kick up the backside. If these people won lotto they’d be complaining about making the effort of having to go down the newagency and claim their prize. Maybe they should go take a visit to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and realise just how greedy, selfish and gullible they are about themselves.

  5. Oh they need to get over it – be appreciative of the fact that you went to the taping, and you got a free gift. Girls, it’s a free diamond – not matter what! This is making me feel embarrased on behalf of the rest of the country. Maybe the big O should have had that money donated to people who would appreciate it rather than these selfish fools!

  6. How selfish can you get? O_O They shouldn’t have got anything at all…

    Saw Oprah’s show
They were upset for the delivery times….
    They got it for free….

Now complaining about the size (What did they expect? massive diamonds all around the necklace with a $400 value?)

People can be so stupid and ungrateful…

    Suck it up princesses

  7. Interesting! I thought that they would of been given this on the day. Seems a bit drawn out process, in my opinion. I can see how some people may of felt cheated. The necklace in description doesn’t sound that good and I don’t know how they can justify the price/value when its silver.

  8. One trashy tabloid newspaper quoting one unnamed “fan”? Pfft. Typical News Limited pseudo-controversy. Chill out everyone. The vast majority of people aren’t whinging, they’re happy they saw Oprah and chuffed they got anything for free.

  9. I was lucky enough to be at the show and had a great day. That fact all 6000 (or however many) people in the audience were given a gift is pretty amazing. My necklace hasn’t arrived yet so haven’t seen what it looks like, but I’m pretty embarrassed that there are people complaining. Get over it.

  10. omg, what ungrateful, selfish idiots. It’s a gift. It’s a gift from Oprah. You were privilieged to go to the shows in Australia. So stop you’re whingeing and be thankful for what you’re given. They don’t deserve a bloody diamond necklace by the sound of things.

  11. Un-freaking-believable!!!! People are whining about this? Winfrey was under No compulsion whatsoever to provide any kind of gift to her audience and the sponsor providing this necklace didn’t have to undertake to provide them. My God, what a shocking culture of complaint we have developed here in Australia. Honestly, I think we are unhappy unless we have something to whine about, no matter how minor. And we have the gall to criticise the Poms for being whingers.

  12. I got a pearl and thought the same thing, except my reaction was that it was a freebie, it doesn’t actually matter and certainly doesn’t affect my life – not worth complaining about, it was something for nothing and I was lucky to get one no matter what it looked like!

  13. I can’t believe there are people out there that want to have a whinge about it, talk about ungrateful ! It’s still a $400 gift they received & they had a great day out at the Show recordings. Get a life people…
