Seth McFarlane to meet The Flintstones

Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane is set to give classic cartoon The Flintstones a new lease of life.

Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad creator Seth MacFarlane is set to give classic cartoon The Flintstones a new lease of life.

MacFarlane will give a 21st century spin to the classic 1960s animated comedy series about two hard-working middle-class families living with contemporary conveniences in the dinosaur-era town of Bedrock.

The original series ran from 1960 to 1966, following Fred Flintstone, his wife Wilma, and their neighbours Barney and Betty Rubble. Inspired by the equally glorious Jackie Gleason sitcom, The Honeymooners, it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010.

“The very first cartoon character I drew at age two was Fred Flintstone,” MacFarlane said in a statement.

“So it’s appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who’s too good for him.”

FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly said the network hoped to introduce the prehistoric characters to a “whole new generation.”

“FOX has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air,” he said.

It will be hard to top the original series, but this one is tipped for some time in 2013.

  1. This will fail epically. Not only because any ‘new’ take on a classic will no doubt be cringeworthy, but because (if Family Guy and American Dad) the only thing Seth McFarlane will do is put a whole lot of crappy crass jokes and non sequiturs in, just for the hell of it.

  2. Did anyone see the last animated flintstones thing. From cartoon network in 2001, called The Flintstones: On the Rocks. Check it out on YouTube. Looks odd, and not funny. Please don’t stuff up the flintstones.

  3. The new Scooby Doo has mucked around with the characters a bit. Velma, for one, used to be the brainy one. But in the latest Scooby Doo, she’s in love with Shaggy and jealous of Scooby.

  4. Have to say I’m worried Family Guy and Cleveland drive me up the wall, the only reason American Dad! maintains a high standard is apparently because McFarlane voices Stan and Roger but he doesn’t do much show running.

  5. I don’t know why people are up in arms about this. I mean Scooby Doo has a few different cartoons popping up here and there, and some of them are recent, so why should this be any different?

  6. No! Why must Hollywood continue to do this? They remade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and it sucked, they remade He-Man and it sucked. Stop ripping off other peoples’ ideas and come up with your own. Then again, we are talking about Seth MacFarlane.

  7. I don’t mind Family Guy, cannot stand American Dad! and The Cleveland Show.

I’m really not looking forward to this. The Flintstones should be left as is. Don’t mess with a classic.

  8. I actually like the sound of this – after all, there have been dozens of tragic spin-offs of the show since the 60s – but it will be interesting to see what tone they go with with the humour.

  9. Seth MacFarlane has already dipped his toe in with The Flintstones….if anyone has seen his “Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy” they’ll know what I mean!!
If you haven’t seen it go to youtube and search “Cavalcade Flintstone”.

  10. The Flintstones with a crass Seth McFarlane twist – no thanks; leave the show untouched in its original glory there is no need or want for The Flintstones to return and quite frankly I don’t want to see the Flintstones with a 21st century twist especially if they are going to make it more adult oriented. It is a family show first and foremost and I am not in anyway a prude to crass humor but The Flintstones is the wrong fit for this genre.

  11. A lot of people know McFarlane for his adult stuff, but back in the day he worked on a lot of now classic Cartoon Network shows like Dexter’s Lab, Cow & Chicken & Johnny Bravo. Those were kids cartoons but with adult sensibilities if he can recapture some of that magic The Flintstones might be pretty good, besides it surely can’t be worse than those god awful live action films.
