U-turn as WIN / NBN agree to air Come Fly with Me

WIN and NBN have now reversed a decision not to air UK comedy Come Fly with Me, following the ratings it attracted on Nine.

“What a kerfuffle…”

WIN and NBN have now reversed a decision not to air UK comedy Come Fly with Me, following the ratings it attracted on Nine last night and the the media attention their move attracted.

Last night the show pulled 1.48m viewers at 8pm.

The controversy went global via Twitter, with co-creator Matt Lucas thanking Australian audiences “for your kind comments re #ComeFlyWithMe…those of you who were deemed sophisticated enough to watch it.”

The decision sparked outrage from viewers who took to theherald.com.au to slam it as “insulting” and “patronising” to regional viewers.

The Daily Telegraph reports WIN executives were the first to revise its decision, buoyed by the positive ratings and responding to calls to telecast the shelved show.

NBN said in a short statement this afternoon that it had reviewed the ratings in the metropolitan markets and ‘‘responding to viewer feedback’’ would telecast Come Fly With Me from next Monday at 8pm.

NBN’s CEO Deborah Wright said: ‘‘NBN is pleased to confirm that due to the debut success of the program in metro markets and the local viewing community feedback NBN will telecast Come Fly With Me on Monday nights at 8pm to complement our already strong, ratings winning , Monday night line-up’’.

It isn’t clear if WIN and NBN will air from episode 1 or 2.

So was that really all worth it?

  1. A very good marketing ploy. we are seeing a lot of this. Do you really think the whole judges fued on DWTS is for real. Its rather clever and it works. There will be much more of this thats for sure. Sam Newman is the master of this and has been for years.

  2. I can take a wild guess, and say this was Not a “Magnificent Marketing Ploy”….. Show me one they ever have achieved??? A total insult from WIN, and of course, totally expected given their history. We are not fools!

  3. Butters – NBN wins almost every single night of the year. They could show the test pattern 24/7 and still flog the crap out of Prime and Southern Cross Ten.

  4. How ridiculous.

“Our audience is different and we will not tolerate programming such as “Come Fly With Me……. oh wait what’s that, it’s a smash hit and we can make serious bank off this show… oh, our audience will love it after all – it’s back in the schedule!”

  5. Poor Programming Decision or
    Magnificent Marketing Ploy.

Lots of column inches on this and I’d say Regional viewers will also tune in large numbers.

  6. Has anyone thought this may have been a very clever publicity stunt by Nine. Get the regionals to ban…more people in cities tune in to see why it was ban, and ban lifted after one week.

Anyway Im glad it worked because the show last night was great, even if we in wollongong had to wait unitl 10pm and watch on GO

  7. Well, we just finished watching trhe 1st ep – couldn’t imagine what would have been snipped for the earlier time slot (maybe they trimmed some minutes out of the 30 min prog to let some ads in…?)

But, really – these two were funnier in Little Britain.

    Not much new here, chaps…

  8. What was the point exactly? I doubt it was regarding the content. WIN and NBN probably didn’t want yet another flop on their hands. ;P

  9. Beautifuly played NBN .. a leson to all aspiring programers , let the other guy try it then watch Your ratings go nuts on the rebound . Well that’s what you would Like to believe as a share holder .. but in reality ….. ?? .

  10. A cynic would say they did the whole thing for the attention due to recent rating woes… Though the network isn’t that smart so no doubt it was yet another stupid move that just proves they are the worst network when it comes with dealing with their audience!

  11. Dear Suits at WIN TV and NBN.

A wishlist of shows to pull

    Sunday version of ACA
Between the lines (Eddie again, please)
    Customs (Poor man’s Border Security)
CSI Miami (Who’s watching it, own up)

    That is all

  12. This whole situation is Insulting and Offensive for my family and friends up there … fire the judgemental clown who decided not to show it in the first place …
    Great for publicity though!!!!
