Former actor Jon Blake, whose career was cut short after a tragic road accident in the 1980s and left him with permanent brain damage, has died.

Blake’s accident took place during filming of The Lighthorsemen when the handsome, rising star was set for stardom.

He had previously featured in television dramas including The Restless Years and the ANZACS miniseries.

In the 25 years that followed his family fought court cases for suitable care for him for years, a plight that was recently featured by Angela Bishop in a moving story on 6:30 with George Negus.

It was only recently the former actor finally won some better quality of life thanks to the devotion of his son, Dustin.

He finally saw his movie on the big screen before he died.

  1. I feel like I grew up watching him. I first saw “Sonny” Blake in The Restless Years, then he popped up as the young cop and love interest for Judy in ACP and I was hooked, through him I watched Boy In The Bush and discovered my long-time favourite actor Kenneth Brannagh . We then all saw him in Anzacs and a swag of movies (I loved Cool Change with “Bev” from Neighbours). But I have never watched Lighthorsemen – could never bring myself to do it.

He was an amazing charismatic actor – what would have happened if he had not had that accident, well we will never know. At least he finally got to be with his son. Vale Jon “Sonny” Blake.

  2. Marg’s comment is so true! In the early 80’s I was a teenager looking up to the next generation of great actors such as John Blake and Mel Gibson.
At some point while watching a Mel Gibson movie I sometimes wondered where John Blake could have been, if he had not been in that crash?…then trying to imagine the kind of life he was living and made me feel so sad!
“John Blake, you were not forgoten” and you have left a part of you in your movies.
Now that you are gone and no longer in pain…I prefer to remember only your great
    achievements. RIP.

  3. its only a journey through our restless years let our hearts roam free, jon 1st came to prominence on the soap the restless years in 1977 i had the privaledge of working with him on a country practice in 1984 and he truly was genuinely a nice guy his restless years are now over rip.

  4. Exactly 30 years ago Jon made a film called Freedom, back in SA film corp days, it’s a classic (must see) in my books!…without doubt he could have been as big or bigger than Mel Gibson. I’m glad he and his son finally got the Freedom they deserved…I’ll always remember the larrikin actor with raw talent!

  5. Jon Blake was my first big crush. I remember watching him in ANZACS and swooned through the Lighthorseman. Jon was talented and sexy. The perfect man. I was shattered when he had his car crash. Rest in peace gorgeous man. You were one in a million xo

  6. Never wait to say ‘I Love You’….one never knows how long they are going to be here….
Glad Jon and his son had that time together….

  7. Very sad end to a tragic life, at least now he can finally rest in peace, no pain. Hope the doctor who swindled him rots in hell, i do believe in a thing called karma…

  8. Holy sh*t – just when you think your own life has troubles, talk about perspective. What a sad, but ultimately, beautiful story – returned to his son for care, and finally able to see his movie. Incredible.
