Will Captain Jack still be bisexual?

Minor spoiler: Now filmed in the US with it's eyes on the Starz Network, how will Torchwood deal with the sexuality of its leading man?

Minor Spoiler: When it was announced that Torchwood‘s latest season had its eyes firmly set on the USA, fans had some concerns that the sexuality of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) might be compromised.

Many remember his romance with Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) and a Hollywood screen kiss with The Captain (Matt Rippy).

While Barrowman has called the character bisexual he acts “omnisexual,” prepared to bed either gender, or indeed any species. It is sci-fi after all.

Recently he told EW, “I knew they would be true to the show and not change drastically.”

“If it was watered down, I wouldn’t have done it. For those people who are our staunch fans, it’s going to have the heart and soul of Torchwood which we’ve always had, plus the energy and excitement of a show that’s bigger and better.”

As for his character’s love life, Barrowman says Capt. Jack “gets to have full-on boy-sex a couple of times. On those days going to work I’d wake up and Scott my partner would say, ‘What are you filming today?’ And I’d say, ‘Oh it’s going to be a tough day, I get to have sex with a 24 year old.’”

Tough day at the office, Cpt. Jack?

The new season premieres at 8:30pm July 9th on UKTV.

  1. Why does it have to be an issue, it already had an american fan base and the people who might complain aren’t the ones the show is aimed at anyway.

I love this show and Captain Jack, he’s been a great influence through his Doctor Who appearences and Torchwood. If they’ve changed it then its going to be bad for them.

  2. not sure wha the fuss is about CJ sexuality-what was interesting in TW was the interaction within the team and their relationships.CJ having multple relationships wil not be as interesting as the relationship between him and Ianto or even that between Tosh adn Owen or Gwen and Rhys. Alien relationships would equally be more interesting.
To me this is just a USA reboot with using the what remained of TW after COE. Once you had taken out the shock elements in COE there was really only a shell of what TW was and on rewatching it actually felt quite repetitious and clichéd-hoping it reverts to kind with the witty dialogue and charismatic interaction

  3. He was bisexual?! And I thought the right word would have been Omnisexual, as in men, women and anything else…

You know what, looking at what Torchwood has become these days (nothing more left of the original show then 2 characters) I wouldn’t put it past Mr.Davies to make Jack whatever he thinks will bring him in more $$$. Well I’ll stick with the first 2 seasons after that Torchwood lost it’s charm and became boring mainstream.

  4. Glad they’re staying true to the vision, though I would like to see more of his diverse sexuality – how many women and aliens have we actually seen him work his magic on?
