Law and Order: SVU orders new team

Cold Case regular Danny Pino and former Chase star Kelli Giddish have been cast in a new-look SVU.

Law and Order: SVU looks set to jump the shark after announcing key new cast members in former Chase star Kelli Giddish and former Cold Case regular Danny Pino.

Both will play new detectives after the exit of Christopher Meloni and a reduced role for Mariska Hargitay.

NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt says, “Kelli and Danny are two great actors who will join a proven cast headed by Mariska Hargitay as this exceptional series heads into a very promising 13th season.”

Creator Dick Wolf added: “I’m very pleased that we have two amazing actors joining the cast. I know this combination will give us the opportunity to explore the world of SVU with new eyes.”

  1. I don’t see the cast changes as being the death of SVU.This season you’ve often seen Finn working with Stabler or Benson and often Benson seems to have been missing from episodes. We need more Munch. They don’t use him as much anymore.

Do we know yet how Stabler will be written out of the show ?
Meloni left after the season finished so could they have him come back for the first episode to be written out or will be be in the car that Charlie Harper drives off a cliff in 2 1/2 Men ?

  2. Not sorry at all to see Meloni go, glad Hargitay will still be around, even though it is going to be in a reduced capacity, I have seen plenty of eps where she was MIA from them, and they still worked, and it wasn’t Meloni who saved such eps for me, it’s an ensemble show, the others make the show work as well.

I will judge whether the 2 new cast work well on SVU or not when I actually see them on the show, not prejudge that situation just because of their previous work, they may bring something entirely different to the table working on a Wolf show.

  3. Always loved LAO SVU. It will never be the same but im very happy with the cast they have picked. Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino are very good actors and I think they we work well with their new role.

  4. For me SVU is so much more about the lead characters and their relationships and interaction with each other than the stories, so I am really disappointed in having a new main team. I’ve watched every episode since Season 1 and have loved watching Stabler and Benson grow as partners and friends, and the intensity and witty banter of the Finn/Munch team is awesome too. I suspect I’ll be watching a lot less, much like I did when the new characters appeared in the latter seasons of The X Files.

  5. A supporting actor from Cold Case and that woman with the bad Southern accent from Chase? Wasn’t a fan of her character on The Good Wife either, now they’ve got her replacing Mariska Hargitay?

This could be a bigger disaster than the first thirteen episodes of Law and Order: LA

  6. With a show like SVU’s grisly and horrific content, the warmth and presence of the two leads (Meloni and Hargitay) not so much the other cast, is imperative in the palatability (is there such a word, sorry if not) of the series continuing success. Both leads have come such a long way over the series, perhaps they peaked a few seasons ago, but there is much to be said for chemistry in a franchise that is so reliant on the guest actors and the plot twists and turns. The original series benefited from such luminaries as Waterston and Orbach; less so Criminal intent with D’onofrio and Erbe. So time will tell if the newbies can make the show watchable. I often ask myself why am I watching such distressing content? The humanity and moral victory of good guys winning over the bad guys must be the reason.
