Qi bumped as ABC repeats Angry Boys

Sorry Stephen Fry, ABC1 would rather play more Chris Lilley.

ABC must be unhappy with the ratings for Angry Boys given it has decided to hold over episodes of Qi to repeat last week’s episode.

Qi (Episode 7) originally scheduled to screen at 9:25pm on Tuesday June 21 has been bumped to 10:20 on ABC2. A repeat episode of Angry Boys (which was originally on ABC2) will now screen in its place.

Last week’s episode pulled just 569,000 viewers, well down on its premiere of 1.36m.

The show went up against the second State of Origin match, although media reports and online comment would suggest the drop is not solely attributed to the lure of the big game.

ABC will also schedule another repeat a week after the State of Origin decider.

Qi (Episode 10) originally scheduled to screen at 9:25pm on Tuesday July 12 has also been bumped to 10:20pm on ABC2. Another repeat of Angry Boys (episode 9) will screen in its place.

But what about Lawrence Leung? He also went up against the State of Origin, pulled a lower figure of 457,000 and unlikely Chris Lilley.

  1. Last week’s episode was quite funny, unlike other episodes which were pretty much unfunny – most likey that’s the reason viewers have been dropping off.

  2. Once again people don’t read— they aren’t taking Qi off or replacing it with Angry Boys, but just switching the times of the two programs. ABC is doing it to help increase the eyeballs for Angry Boys in repeats (which is needed as this show has been improving in the past few weeks). You can still watch your 3 year old garbage at 10:20pm, why I switch over to 7mate and watch Eastbound & Down.

  3. Idiots in charge me thinks. That can be the only reason for them doing this. Sacrificing a decent show like QI for a poor show like Angry Boys.

  4. Terrible decision ABC. Last week QI was the 58th most watched show overall; not bad for a show made in 2007 and screening at 9.30pm on Aunty.

Angry Boys is already repeated on ABC2 and available to watch on iView. Almost anyone who really wanted to see it, would have by now.

I’m predicting the Angry Boys repeat will not rate more than the 685,000 viewers who last week watched QI.

Will we see QI back in post-Origin week if this happens?

Anyone else willing to predict higher or lower? (think The Price is Right)

  5. QI bumped, which makes it another program to watch on ABC iview.
IMO the networks should be coerced into giving a weeks notice of changes to their schedules to allow viewers to change their habits and/or PVRs. A fine of $1000 per minute of variation from schedule should make them think twice. The fine also applies to late running programs! (With some exceptions.) A nice little earner for the Feds.
    David’s pic says it all.
Obviously, we haven’t complained loudly enough about this annoying practice and the ABC is jumping on the Bumpin’ Bandwagon.

  6. I realise people have a different sense of humour, but in my opinion anyone who doesn’t find Angry Boys remotely funny has no sense of humour at all. I am grateful for the repeat as I miss a lot of the lines from laughing so much. Chris Lilley is the greatest comic genius to come out of this country.

  7. Again the idea of an Australian comedy that actually isn’t funny ie Angry Boys. Why the insistence on calling something a comedy when laughs don’t seem to be the point of the exercise? If you want people to think you’re deep, do a drama or an interpretive dance. But if you’re going to play the comedy card – be entertaining, funny and quotable like er – QI.

  8. I noticed they put on a repeat Spicks and Specks episode against State Of Origin as well. Not sure why ratings matter on the ABC but there you go.

  9. You suck, ABC! If they’re not going to watch it the first time, what makes you think they’ll watch it again? QI is a better show anyway!

  10. To bump off something that is working is rather silly and self defeating.
ABC1 sceduling is a real mess nowadays, more so since Brendan Dahill took over as Channel Controller. Get over it ABC, Lilley is not funny, rather unfunny in fact. The ratings for ABC1 are down alot this year, not surprising, given the radical and sometimes Channel 9 style panic changes to the schedule. The ABC1 audience (what is left of it) are a very traditional audience that does not take to programs being moved around to get better ratings. So far this year, the schedule meddling has not worked to a great degree. The only real success so far has been Paper Giants, so successful, it has now been poached by Nine. Anyway, the savy people in viewerland have already seen the bumped eps of QI bypassing the ABC well before the ABC screens them.

  11. So bump a consistently high rating show to run a repeat of a show with flagging ratings. Did the ABC recently employ some ex channel 9 programming staff?

They have a slew of timeslots they could have chosen to use, rather than bumping one of their most popular shows. This is assuming the show deserves another run (which is highly questionable). Why not run QI where it was supposed to be and leave Angry Boys on the channel people expect it to be on, rerun or not? Sorry to bring logic into this…

  12. I’d agree with ABC doing this if Angry Boys was good.

But Gran and Jen Okazaki are the only good characters, and even then they’re rather unfunny a lot of the time. And maybe Dan and Nathan are sometimes funny.

But that’s it. The rest of the characters are unfunny, boring and it just feels that he’s bitten off more than he could chew this time.

  13. Thanks David. I guess I better hope some other channel has something I want to see. Because I watch QI. I wonder how many people will be livid over this. As didn’t they notice they had some good ratings for Kingdom? Then they choose to purposely stuff up a Stephen Fry show this week. Way to go for annoying those people that might have been tempted to watch not to mention the people that actually watch. Yeah I guess they’re chopped liver. Also why show it on a hard to find time to make it work for viewers and channel that it’s not usually on? Are they trying to kill it? They can’t just adjust stuff on the main channel so it takes a week longer if they must do it i.e. skips a week? As that would mean most of the audience would be able to find it.
