Recuperating Bert is in “high spirits”

Patti Newton says Bert is "pretty stable and in high spirits," and hoping to get back to Wicked soon.

72 year old Bert Newton is on the road to recovery after attracting pneumonia last week.

“He’s pretty stable and in high spirits,” Patti Newton has said.

“I think he’s just very disappointed that he is missing the opening of Wicked in Perth, but they just need to cover every avenue so he makes a good recovery.

“Once he is over this we’ll probably go to Perth and I’ll help him settle in over there.

“He loves his work and loves Channel 9. Once he gets over this, I’m sure he will be back,” she said.

Stage musical Wicked opens its Perth season today.

John Frost, the show’s Australian co-producer, said: “The cast and crew of Wicked miss Bert, and are sending him their love and best wishes. We hope he’ll be back with the show very soon.”

An Epworth Hospital spokeswoman said that Newton’s condition was not life-threatening.

“He will probably stay here over the weekend, but he is looking forward to getting back into things quickly,” she said.
