Seven News launches iPhone / iPad app

A Seven News app for iPhone and iPads has been launched with text and video news, twitter feeds and more.

A Seven News application for iPhone and iPads has been launched today, in conjunction with Seven West Media’s online partner, Yahoo platforms.

The free app will deliver text and video news, photos plus integrated twitter feeds and GPS targeting to provide localised news updates.

Chris Willis, Seven Director of News, Sydney, said, “With local news teams, supporting state-based news sites we’re able to deliver even more locally relevant news to our audience.

“The launch of the Seven News app means our audience is able to stay in touch anytime, anywhere with local, national and international news as it happens all from Australia’s number one news source.”

The Seven News app will allow users to provide direct feedback and local story leads to the Seven News team directly from the app, as well as finding out more about the Seven presenters in their area.

The launch of the Seven News app is part of Seven’s and Yahoo!7’s ongoing investment in News digital platforms. The Seven News app will cover local, national, world, sport, finance and entertainment news and will allow Australians to share their favourite news stories on Facebook, Twitter and via email.

For the past five years Seven News and Yahoo!7’s approach has been to closely integrate the online and on-air news teams with dedicated state-specific teams in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney.

The iPad and iPhone apps are also expected to enhance the advertising landscape. “The Yahoo!7 online news audience has grown by over 35 per cent in the past six months alone and Yahoo!7 already has a mobile audience of over two million Australians each month,” said Sue Carter, Head of News, Yahoo!7. “Through the Yahoo!7 news site and now the new iPad and iPhone apps, Australian advertisers will have access to a highly active and engaged audience.”

  1. the yahoo7 tv app is also good. the way you can personalise the tv guide is good for the small iphone screen in a way that i dont think any other app does.

  2. This is a fantastic app. I have been using it for a couple days of now and it sure beats the app Nine have out there. The videos stream without interuption, unlike Nines, and its quality it surprisingly good. I have now ditched Nine’s app in favour for this one. Good job Seven. It took you long enough but you got there.

  3. I’ve had this app for over a week now and it’s excellent (not sure why it’s supposedly only launched today though) – considering it’s free, it’s about the best news app I’ve seen so far and really does extend beyond the broadcast.

@Pletro – Of course they can have video without Flash, firstly it’s an app and not a website and secondly there’s a thing called HTML5 which half of the web has converted to, for example watching YouTube videos on the iPad or iPhone is almost better than on a computer…

I probably come across one website a month which is harder to use without Flash, based on my daily use of my iPad… there’s no need to support it and its battery draining effects.

  4. Yahoo!

My only question is how long before ACA does a story about users going over their data limits with their new iPhone/iPad and being slugged $1000 in excess fees lol.
