Tracy Morgan slammed for anti-gay humour

30 Rock's Tracy Morgan has apologised for homophobic 'jokes' during a stand-up routine after saying if his son were gay he would "stab him."

30 Rock‘s Tracy Morgan has apologised for homophobic ‘jokes’ during a stand-up routine in Nashville, which has seen him slammed by media and gay rights groups.

During his performance, Morgan said “being gay is a choice,” if his son were gay he would “stab him,” and that gay kids who are bullied “should stop whining about it.”

He later apologised saying, “I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others…even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

But it wasn’t enough to stop the outrage.

In a statement to TMZ, 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey wrote: “The violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community.

“It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person.

“I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at 30 Rock, without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”

30 Rock’s Cheyenne Jackson, who’s gay, spoke out about his co-star’s remarks Saturday, saying he’s “disgusted”: I am disgusted and appalled by Tracy Morgan’s homophobic rant. The devastating repercussions of hate-filled language manifest in very real ways for today’s LGBTQ youth. I’ve known Tracy for two years, spent many long hours with him on set, and I want to believe that this behavior is not at the core of who he is. I’m incredibly disappointed by his actions, and hope that his apology is sincere.”

“Hateful remarks that mock youth suicides and the very real emotional and sometimes physical bullying LGBT kids face on a daily basis have no place in a comedy routine,” said Fred Sainz from GLAAD. “I’m shocked that Tracy Morgan would find humor in so viciously attacking our youth. If these allegations are true, Tracy Morgan must immediately accept responsibility and apologize. His employer, NBC Universal, also must come forward and condemn these atrocious comments.”

NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt did indeed respond, saying, “Tracy’s comments reflect negatively on both 30 Rock and NBC – two very all-inclusive and diverse organizations – and we have made it clear to him that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

The Huffington Post called on him to be fired.

Comedian Wanda Sykes criticised Tennessee lawmakers. “They’ve created an anti-gay environment,” and suggested she didn’t “believe Tracy would be so ignorant in LA, because we have a mayor, a city council, and police chief who believes we are all equal.”

Chris Rock initially defended Morgan’s right to use “foul inappropriate” language, but later distanced himself.

  1. When Kramer from Seinfeld went all racist a few years ago he ceased to never exist ever since. Same should happen here, because it sends a message. No matter how old you are or where you’re from, you can’t be racist anymore and you can’t say anti-gay comments. Simple huh?

  2. For anyone who think the “comedy” routine from this hate monger is funny and just an artistic expression, I’d suggest you read the full transcript.

It truly will make any decent human being sick in the stomach.

And true to someone else in this page said, it is done soberly, deliberate and most likely scripted, which makes it even more horrible to think how this man perceive the people around him. Not to mention his own children God forbid they are gay.

  3. I’m a huge fan of 30 Rock but seriously thinking of not watching the last season. Mel Gibson makes some mildly but offensive racist comments and his career is finished. Tracey Morgan advocates violence against gays and he gets away with an apology? Seriously? And we’re told it’s not the first time. It’s not even like he was drunk and “misspoke” – it was a deliberate and well thought out in advance part of his act in a public place.

I say get rid if him from 30 Rock. I mean everyone knows that blacks are too stupid to appreciate that subtle humour anyway. But hey, that’s just my opinion. (For anyone who really is stupid I was being ironic).

  4. Hypocrite. If a white comedian had said he’d stab he’s son if he dated a black girl the torches & pitchforks would be out & the villagers would be massing.

  5. Imagine if Cheyenne Jackson had said that he’d stab his son if he was black and that black kids who are bullied should stop whining about it. Well, he’d be fired in a heartbeat. Double standards really. This is not the first time that Morgan has mocked homosexuals in his act. So, sorry? I don’t think so. Tina Fey should get rid of him. He’s the weakest link on the show, too grating and annoying.

  6. I’m appalled that Fey and Sainz did not include the Q lifestyle in their all encompassing GLBT/LGBT references to gays, as Jackson did when he said LGBTQ!

  7. Ok so let me write this down….it’s hard to keep up with the constantly changing PC trend these days.

Interest groups wanting to ‘reprogram’ a comedian because his comedy bits are wrong and offensive is good. Interest groups wanting to ‘reprogram’ a gay or lesbian person because their chosen lifestyle is wrong and offensive is bad.

    Ok, got it.
