It’s now just one year until the London 2012 Olympics and both SKY News and CNN plan to mark the occasion.

Sky News sports reporter Matt Shirvington will report live from London tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5:30am AEST in Begin the One Year Countdown to the London 2012 Olympics.

He will showcase a range of celebrations taking place all over London, as the host city prepares and catch up with Australian Olympic pole vault champion, Steve Hooker, on his preparations.

Sports reporter, James Bracey, will bring viewers all the action from Sydney’s Circular Quay – including a special update by AOC President, John Coates. Key Australian athletes, who hope to be part of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team, will also be on hand to celebrate the countdown.

Meanwhile CNN is also launching a series of special Olympics 2012 programming, Aiming For Gold which marks the start of a year of dedicated programming.

It launches with a Sebastian Coe interview and includes questions from CNN’s audience.

CNN’s program speaks to the biggest Olympic stars, as well as the newsmakers driving the myriad decisions and events that contribute to the 2012 Games, with contributions from its many bureaux around the world to bring all aspects of the event – financial, social, cultural, political or sporting – to global viewers across all its platforms, from TV to cnn.com and through dedicated social media on Twitter and Facebook.

‘Aiming For Gold’ kicks off its year-long programming with a key interview with Lord Sebastian Coe, former Olympic 1500 meter champion and the man responsible for spear-heading the London 2012 campaign. Coe talks to CNN’s Don Riddell about the challenges, controversies and opportunities the Games will bring to people from across the world, including questions from the CNN audience.

Also in the debut show, Becky Anderson reports on London’s history in hosting the games – in 1908, 1948 and now 2012; Stan Grant looks at the legacy of the 2008 Beijing Olympics; and Christina Ohurugu, a British 2008 gold medallist who grew up in the shadow of the games being built in east London, talks about the inspiration the 2012 provide.

  1. of course it’s massive…it’s 2 weeks every 4 years…2 weeks of the biggest sporting events in the world and we have to wait 4 years til the next one! As for the comments about boycotting…absolutely boycott them! they don’t just not agree with the lifestyle, they outlaw it…hardly a developmental country if they are still persecuting people for being gay…I’m straight and 100% against persecuting based on sexual preference and don’t think a country who still lives with these laws deserves the honour of a world event such as the olympic games!

  2. Saw on Fox Sports News today, they will be having 8 channels. Definitely won’t be watching any of it on 9 (same as Comm Games last year, didn’t see 1 bit of 10). No doubt these 8 channels will be no cost on Foxtel but $20 or $30 on Austar (if they are still Austar?) *rollseyes*

  3. @ Anthony Mai,

Just because people don’t agree with your view on life doesn’t mean you should boycott them. If Qatar get the 2022 Olympic Games, I’d be very happy considering it’s a strong developing country that will most likely build the very best facilites for the games enabling athletes to go faster, higher and stronger then ever before.

  4. I almost forgot about the London Olympics since I haven’t been seeing those awful mascots walking around…

I’m mildly looking forward to them (just hoping Australia does well!)… I won’t be going to London but I’m happy to know that I wouldn’t be thrown in jail if I do choose to go (ahem, Qatar 2022; illegal to be gay, please boycott people)

  5. Plus, 7 were hated for their coverage of non live sport to try make the games profitable. It didn’t help 7sports credibility. And it even won the IOCs games coverage of the games!

  6. I can’t understand the buzz of this from tv networks point of view. Don’t get me wrong I love the games etc but 2 weeks every 4yrs? Only 2000 delivered amazingly exceptional ratings. Think networks pay too much for the games once you sub in thr other expenses like reporters, crews, broadcasts on the ground.
