  1. Right there with you Russell.

To repeat you: This looks beyond bad.

Come on ABC – the competition is all dying, you and SBS and 31 will soon be the only game in town. What’s to fear?? (Midsomer Murders anyone? Oh god my brain…..)

  2. Oh dear so little quality product seems to come out of our ABBC these days. The ABBC’s latest offering is the new drama “Crownies” A perfect example of another bland, uninspired PC correct drama that ticks every banal box. I know there is a desperation to get the national broadcasters hours of drama content up but this 22 part series of embarrassing rubbish is not how i expect to see my tax dollars spent. Is there anybody at the ABBC responsible for drama these days. I can’t seem to be able to differentiate their product anymore from their commercial counterparts. Roll on the day that the ABC gets back to making thoughtful innovative drama again instead of this cheap mindless pap.

  3. I’ve always called the ABC the reject station because that’s where all the terrible british crap went but that dishonour seems to belong to 7Two these days & there does seem to be a few decent aussie shows on the ABC these days.

Mind you RAake looked quite dodge and could barely get thru an episode but I’m looking forward to Crownies and the Slapp or whatever its called but I will probably miss the latter since I still have no idea when it will be on.

And I don’t visit this site every day

  4. From the Newscastle Herald from a real TV reviewer:
There’s a new drama series coming up on the ABC this month and I want to be among the first to tell you it’s a cracker. It’s called Crownies and it begins on ABC1 on Thursday, July 14, at 8.30pm. Slick, sharp and sexy, it’s a This Life-style lawyer drama with a hot cast. I watched the first three episodes in one go. Greedy, I know, but they left me hungry for more.

  5. Note to kim Dalton:Who approved this choice of material at 8:20 on Sunday night? What was anyone thinking? You could not have turned more people away.

  6. I was looking forward to this, but everything that ABC has shown so far has been a disappointment with an extraordinary emphasis on Sex, Youths and Youths having Sex! It works for Skins, but I was hoping for something slightly more substantial from Crownies.

  7. I am going to be fascinated to see what the impact of this “sneak peak” will have on the debut figures of this series. If the word of mouth is all negative maybe the ABC has made a strategic error by giving everyone too much time to discuss. A bit like the Ben Elton show – dead before it even started due to the power of social media. I agree with Russell – the ABC should be leading the way with Australian drama and I’d like to see great Australian drama on Sunday nights to complement the British offerings. Where did all teh extra drama money go? I don’t feel like we’ve seen it on screen yet. If Crownies is the big drama strategy then I’m pretty disappointed.

  8. I wanted to reserve my judgement on this but, after having already seen a short clip, I have not been able to do so. Still, I think it deserves another hearing just before I flick over to Le Tour.

  9. Sex etc., is it possible that Aussie writers/producers can’t write 20×42 minute episodes of anything without sex and all the boring overdone associated relationship issues

Maybe they (Aussie writers/producer) should have a look at the excellent UK series Silk to see how a real law TV series is made

    Rake and Crownies both shockers!

  10. This looks beyond bad.
Why is ABC1 not capable if producing cable quality drama like Cloudstreet, Satisfaction, Live My Way, Tangle etc.
Shoulnt it be the national broadcaster leading the way?
This looks like a daytime soap from the 90s. Like GP or E Street or something
