Airdate: The Protectors

Terrorism in Scandinavia comes to SBS in a new Danish drama series. Spooky.

SBS has previously screened Anna Pihl and The Eagle and tonight it begins another Danish drama series, The Protectors (not to be confused with the Brit series of the same name!)

This Danish crime series focuses on the lives and missions of the specialists and their superiors, while also portraying the people they protect.

The 10 part series was made in 2008 drama but given the theme of terrorism and recent events in Scandinavia the timing is eerily spooky….

As violence and terror become increasingly globalised, even tiny Denmark can become a target of  international crime and terrorism. For this reason, the Danish government has set up the elite Personal  Protection Unit, whose top bodyguards form a tight-knit community of friends who live and work together.

Winner of the International Emmy Award as Best Drama Series in 2009, The Protectors takes a nail-biting,  in-your-face look at the dangers threatening public figures today – and those who protect them.

In the first episode, several young, aspiring policemen and a single woman are taking part in the annual  admission test in Copenhagen to become protectors. Among them are Jonas, Rasmus and Jasmina.

Throughout three ice-cold weeks in January, they experience a series of physical and mental tests.

Meanwhile, Henrik Skelbaek, Danish Minister for Defence, arrives in Baghdad to celebrate the New Year  with the Danish security forces. He is protected by police officers from the Secret Service – and yet the  Minister’s visit proves fateful as one of his young protection officers, Ibro, is killed.

When Ibro’s father, ex-soldier Catic, decides the Defence Minister is accountable for his son’s death, he  threatens Skelbaek’s life – and a race against times ensures as the Minister’s protectors, including some  of the newly trained recruits, rally to find Catic before he can carry out his threat.

It begins Thursday, 28 July at 10.00pm on SBS ONE/

  1. I am a real fan of this series and I’m very frustrated i’ve missed the rest of this series because I was out of the country. There is real tension and drama without incestuous inter-colleague love affairs, Very professional, well done.

  2. Hi moog,I definitely share your taste on Scandanavian type movies especially mrs Phil. I was possibly more fortunate in that I programmed both The Protectors and the following Exit as well on my set top/hard drive. Believe me, I was extremely p….d off when I discovered the last bit missing! Later in the day however it was pleasing to discover that when I started watching Exit, there were the last four missing minutes of protector at the beginning of Exit. This is not the first time I have fluked this. If you are timer recording a presciouse title on hard drive you might consider selecting the following title as well if it does not clash with another post recording. This is essential when recording commercial channel programs where the the posted times are as credible as a politician’s promise!!!! E.g. last two satuday’s Harry Potter movies shut down half an hour before the finish………
    As the movie goes………
Minister is picked up by the protectors
Lover still inside, has shower, gets dressed, rings for taxi and goes outside to meet taxi.
The taxi (stolen by the angry father earlier on) rocks up immediatelly and picks up unsuspecting lover
When lovers request to be dropped off is refused an turns her to panic.,a couple of well delivered fist blows by driver renders her extremely and quickly unconsciose
    Scene back to headquarters…….
The protectors are becoming very concerned about the rogue nature of the father(not yet aware of the kidnapped lover scenario) Hoever they appear to be raising the priority level to reel him in.
Fade to………., to be continiued, rolling credits, etc. SBS have claimed that this program will be available on line though I have not seen it yet at this moment in time.

Hope I have been of some help.
    Eddy.

  3. Hi David – great show, have been a huge fan of the Eagle, Unit One and Anna Pihl –
I missed the last few mins of this show due to not setting extra time on the recording – can you let us know how it ends? Cheers
