Aussie dramas flicker in heated ratings battles

Home and Away was the only Aussie drama to make it into the Top 50 shows in Week 31, as Reality and Variety continue to dominate the ratings.

Drama production has been quite healthy of late but last week it struggled to make an impact as Reality and Variety dominated Week 31 of ratings.

Only one drama series, the UK import Midsomer Murders, managed a place in the Top 20 shows.

Only one Australian drama, Home and Away, landed in the Top 50.

In fairness it was a week without Winners & Losers, while Offspring and Sea Patrol have concluded. But Crownies is doing it tough while Rescue Special Ops has just learned it will not be recommissioned by Nine.

Australia’s Got Talent was the week’s top show on 2.19m viewers, while The Block and MasterChef were best for Nine and TEN respectively.

Week 31

  1. Crownies is doing it tough because it’s not very good.

I don’t know about others but I have given up watching drama on free to air TV. I’d rather pay for the DVD (either rent or own) and know I can watch the episodes in the right order and within a time frame that suits me rather than the sporadic airing of most shows these days. EG I liked the show Downton Abbey which a friend sent me from the UK on DVD – I would never have bothered waiting up to half an hour each week for it to start while Dancing Prats was winding down.

  2. I’m going to miss Rescue Special Ops. The storylines are weak but the show doesn’t pretend to be a quality drama. It has warm characters and it’s fun watching them perform heroic rescues.

  3. Given the large amount of Reality tv & Real tv on FTA today, Fiction tv probably isn’t doing too bad in some ways. 1mil+ is not a given anymore, so perhaps shows shouldn’t automatically be considered a fail if 1mil+ isn’t reached, whether that be Aus, USA, or UK product, when it comes to Movies, Drama or Sit. Comedy.
The Networks can’t have it both ways, flood the screen with Reality & Real tv, and still expect high no.s for Fiction tv, something has got to give and Fiction watching seems to be it, so re-adjustments re Fiction no.s has to come re success and being considered a ‘complete’ failure.

  4. It is a shame Crownies isn’t rating better, it is getting quite good!
Shame about RSO, it is a well made show & the cast gel very well!
Reality is only dominating due to coding: MC, block & Reno = 15 eps instead of 3! Drama is still popular

  5. Shame about Rescue Special Ops, maybe Ten can pick it up to run alongside Rush. I guess Nine is fretting about the huge debt due next year.

  6. I don’t know Dogue, the RiverBoys thing seems a bit trying -to-be-tough, I guess I’ve become a boring old cow 🙂
Always good when Aussie drama does well though.
Channel 9 is in a rut for sure, like someone else said it was on fire under Packer, if ABC and 9 combine their adult content there would be an awesome channel.

  7. @tmorgan: Nine is doing quite well of late, but ‘Block’ finishes in a matter of weeks, leaving Nine without it’s best performing program of 2011. On the other hand, Seven is yet to return it’s biggest drama in ‘Rafters’, nor has it premiered ‘Strictest Parents’, ‘Four Weddings’, ‘Beauty and Geek’ or ‘X-Factor’, all of which have done well in the demo’s for Seven. Add ‘Wild Boys’ onto that list and they’re looking pretty formidable going into the second half after a small mid-season break with filler content.
Nine tried a strong opening half but their programs really just failed to fire. Too many sitcoms in too few a period of time. Viewers were not entertained.

TEN in trouble if ‘Renovators’ doesn’t hit the mark in upcoming weeks. With so much of their year now devoted to reality stripping, there’s a major risk their audience will be completely worn down.

  8. @pietro: I don’t think so. The channel does reach a significant audience but the nature of the rolling news coverage means that not many viewers stay tuned for extended periods, so that brings the audience share down. I don’t think it’s a failure, it provides an alternative to the suite of other multi-channels which are mostly re-runs or cheap filler, and almost all of it is imported with little local content. And ABC is not purely focused on ratings to determine success or failure.

  9. Hey Sheba,

I don’t think you’ve been watching H&A as of late… the story lines are nothing you’ve seen before… they’re actually Quite good right now… have a look, you’ll see! 🙂

  10. I am not a fan of reality shows….having said that….despite all the complaining in this site and others….about these type of shows….it is painfully obvious that the majority does like them…..

  11. I can’t stand H&A anymore, it’s too old storylines for young kids, which is a shame,I used to love it back in the day though.
Surprised that Top Gear is so far down, I guess 9 stuffed that with mixing old and new last season.
Watched Harry Potter Again on nine last night, what was that about, or did that screen on GO the last time?
Didn’t mind Special Ops for light entertainment, the curse of Gigi strikes again, she’s getting to be as bad a kiss of death as Roxanne Wilson.

  12. Nine wins the demos again. As I have said before, Nine always seems stronger in the second half of the year. Only 1% between them and Seven, compared to earlier in the year when they were losing by 5% or more.
I think Nine should focus on trying to programme consistantly the entire year rather than learning their lesson again and again at the half way mark.
Seven wins thanks to the oldies again, but 3rd in demos, which can’t be good for their advertising revenue.
TEN plods along at a distant 3rd, trailing Nine by 4%. MC hasn’t had the halo effect it once did, thanks to strong opposition from the Block.
