Glee spin-off at Julliard out of the picture

Chris Colfer, Lea Michelle and Cory Monteith were being primed for a spin-off series that would see them graduate and move to Julliard but now it's off the table.

In the on-going saga that is Glee casting for Season 3, now it has emerged that Chris Colfer, Lea Michelle and Cory Monteith were being primed for a spin-off series that would see them graduate and move to Julliard performing arts school in New York.

But now it is off the table.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy has given a lengthy interview to Deadline in which he explains that Colfer, Michelle and Monteith had all been in extensive discussions about the idea of a spin-off and whether they were up for the idea of another show, including having to relocate to New York.

He was particularly disappointed about some actors claiming they found out they had been fired via Twitter. That was Chris Colfer. In Murphy’s mind, nobody was being fired because they had a seven year contract and were being lined up for another show. The problem was nobody was allowed to mention the other show, and the kids were under pressure for answers from media.

Given the way the saga has panned out, now the spin-off is out and the three will graduate but remain within the show.

“They were involved in the process for 3 to 4 months to the point where we were even talking about cities and relocations and we called Julliard and what would that mean and how would we do it. So, for any of those actors to say, ‘I found out that I was fired off the show from Twitter,’ is absolutely 100% not true. None of them were fired. It was never about that.  We were going to do a spin-off where the three of them were going to go on.  They all knew what was happening, they all had approved it, they all said  they wanted to do it,” Murphy explains.

The official announcement about the spin-off show was to come during the next season.

“The idea was to do it this fall when Glee gets back on the air.  Then, to pick up and read the actors saying, ‘We found out we were fired from Twitter.’  All of us, the studio, the network, were like, ‘OK, that isn’t exactly cool,’ because we involved all three of them in that decision. So then what happened is that we decided, ‘OK, let’s not do it.’  So that’s where we are today. Maybe we’ll talk about it in April or May, but for now let’s just concentrate on making Season 3 the best that we can do.

“When I say they’re seniors and they’re not coming back to the show, what I did not say is they’re not coming back to the show because there will be another show. What Brad [Falchuk] said this weekend at Comic-Con is now correct: they’re graduating.  What we wanted is to get people away from this idea that the actors were fired which is ludicrous. Nobody was fired. They were talked to for months about the show.”

Murphy does not rule out a spin-off in the future but affirms he is no longer actively pursuing it.

“We’re not doing anything for the next several months except for this third season. I would prefer and I know Brad would prefer and I think the actors will prefer to roll up our sleeves and do a really good season and if there is a spin-off, talk about it in April.”

  1. Wow! It seems like Ryan Murphy is a bigger prima donna than Kurt Hummel. Yes Ryan, please focus on making your one mess of a show watchable again.

  2. Who can blame them for thinking that stating they will no longer be on glee means they are fired. Obviously spin off discussions are not set in stone as he has just cancelled it. His first statement read as though no matter what they would not be on glee next year, even if you are privy to spin off talk there is no guarantee of a job from it so there is definite potential for being left out in the cold. He should have kept his mouth shut until a deal was finalized, that is no way to treat your staff. He must have known media would come at them with questions they couldn’t answer, they may have just been playing along with his ruse and not even meant it, but now it has cost them a show.

  3. we all know when news about what Ryan is doing surfaces…..he quickly changes everything to keep people guessing (anyone remember that Sam was meant to be Kurt’s boyfriend till it hit the web then he changed it and introduced Blaine) He probably had the idea but now its old news he changed it to freshen it up.

  4. How ridiculous. Wasn’t Murphy the one who came out and said that those three actors wouldn’t be around after season 3?

I think he has taken a throw-away comment from one of the actors about being fired via Twitter way too far. What kind of a diva completely abandons all plans and discussions for a spin-off featuring two of their main actors because of one throw-away comment? No wonder the series veers from greatness to disaster on an episode by episode basis.

Not to mention the fact that Murphy is kind of out of options. If he keeps those three actors on Glee after all his nonsense about having them graduate (whether by being forced to repeat a year of high school or as assistant coaches to Mr Shuester), then the show will become even more of a joke. The only realistic option would be to spin them off into a university based series. Or perhaps kill them all off out of spite.
