Ratings love Reality

MasterChef, Australia's Got Talent, The Block: Reality TV is firing across three networks, but Seven again wins the week.

Reality television -you know you love it. At least according to the figures, Australia does.

There are five brands that are firing right now across three networks: MasterChef Australia, Australia’s Got Talent, The Block, Dancing with the Stars and The Amazing Race Australia. More is to come with Top Design, The X Factor and The Renovators. Be careful what you wish for.

Seven won Week 27 led by Seven News, Downton Abbey and Australia’s Got Talent. The Block put some good runs on the board, helping address Nine’s primary channel. Nine still doesn’t code the show separately, giving it a lower weekly average than MasterChef‘s strategy. TEN’s cook-off continues to deliver, shaking off early season questions about its performance.

7TWO broke a multichannel record with the biggest single audience yet for Bernard Tomic’s Wimbledon match, reaching 734,000 viewers.

  1. People really do ‘turn off their brains’ when they watch TV don’t they? Though in the case of these five ‘reality’ shows it’s more a case of putting their brains into reverse!

  2. good to see hawaii 5 ‘0 has picked up in the ratings also Merlin, go channel 10 for show some decent show…….Luv SVU bring on the new eps.

  3. Channel 7 deserve to win, they have more diverse programmes and well worth watching and they Don’t keep having repeat after repeat after repeat programmes each night following one another, as channel 9 do. Channel 9 dont seem to know where they are going these days, and their shows are not worth watching. Glad than channel 10 are creeping up, keep up the good work.l

  4. Thanks for that David.

I know it may probably never happen as the results would have to be ever so close, but does what you say imply that a channel’s share and victory for a night may also be changed due to timeshift ect?

    1. Preliminary ratings often get adjusted, including for overruns. In a week’s time it will be adjusted again to add Timeshifted figured from PVRs. Occasionally that can change the outcome too.

  5. I hope Nine wins next week. This year is turning out to be worse than 2007 for them.
I also am a supporter of Nine resurfacing as the one. Seven has a shocking lineup and yet is still number one, which is irritating. When Nine was the one, they had a fantastic lineup until they started being too reliant on renovation shows.

  6. I dont understand how TAR:A is in the success basket. I think it would be in the ‘moderate’ basket given all the important elements that networks weight up. including cost of production which for this is high .

  7. just to expand on why ch9 is in with a chance.

In Melb on Tues they have the AFL EJ Whitten legends game, which is a load of crap, but rates well locally. The SOO decider which will without doubt be huge. The consistancy of the Block, yeah its a bit crappy, but doing well for them. On ch7 network, some of the sporting Wimbledon share may migrate to Tour De France on SBS. So with a bit of good fortune ch9 may just sneak a win. Will be interesting.

  8. Of those five reality shows, I only watch one (The Block) and that’s only because my husband likes it, if I had the choice I wouldn’t bother. Can’t stand “reality” tv!

  9. Thanks for the weekly wrap up David.

So Seven still wins by 5 points!

WIth this Wed’s State of Origin decider match, could this be Nine’s best chance of winning a week (this year) with The Block performing every weeknight?

David, are you able to tell when was the last time Nine lost all 3 weeks when the SOO was broadcast in the same week?
