SBS Director of Television quits for Shine Australia

Matt Campbell, SBS’s Director of Television, has resigned to become the Managing Director of Shine Australia & NZ.

Matt Campbell, SBS’s Director of Television and Online Content, has resigned to become the Managing Director of Shine Australia and New Zealand.

Campbell joined SBS in 2004 as Network Programmer and became Director of Television and Online Content in 2006. During that time he has overseen the network’s slate of international acquisitions and Australian production.

His exit comes at a time of significant change at SBS, following the recent appointment of a new Managing Director, Michael Ebeid.

Today Ebeid said, “I’m disappointed to see Matt leave SBS after seven years and so much success bu twith his enviable track record of producing and acquiring great content for SBS, it’s not surprising a great offer to join Shine came his way.

“Matt leaves SBS on a high following our broadcast of the ground-breaking documentary series Go Back To Where You Came From. His impressive list of credits also includes First Australians, Immigration Nation and East West 101 as well as SBS’s most popular programming such as Mythbusters, Top Gear and local favourites Rockwiz, Wilfred and Letters and Numbers.

Campbell’s newly created position at Shine Australia follows the recent additional responsibilities assumed by joint CEO’s Carl and Mark Fennessy as CEO Shine USA and President, Shine Network. He will oversee management of all Shine productions and brands.

Campbell said of his SBS exit: “It’s bittersweet to be leaving SBS at such an exciting time for the network with Michael’s arrival and fantastic, innovative projects in the pipeline but the opportunity to join Shine Australia is a terrific opportunity.

“I’m leaving one of the best jobs in the Australian television market. I know with Michael’s leadership and the energy he has brought to the job that SBS is well equipped to continue its success in the future.

Shine’s Mark Fennessy said: “Matt is an outstanding executive who is highly respected both locally and internationally. His expertise across multiple platforms of content will be a significant asset to our business in Australia. We’re delighted to welcome him into the family at Shine.”

Campbell added, “I think Australian TV is amongst the best in the world right now and it is great local content that’s driving that success. I am thrilled to be joining Shine at this very important time of expansion. What Mark, Carl and the team have achieved in just 18 months is astounding. I look forward to being part of that creative group, extending current brands and creating original, innovative content across all platforms.”

Campbell’s exit will be swift, taking place on Thursday, due to a conflict of role.

SBS will undertake a national and international search for his replacement in coming months, with Rob Pegley, General Manager, Business and Operations for Television and Online Content to act in the role in the interim.

SBS Network Programmer Jane Roscoe remains at SBS.
