I had never heard the term 'Getting off at Redfern' until I watched a preview of Sex: An Unnatural History.

I had never heard the term ‘Getting off at Redfern’ until I watched a preview of Sex: An Unnatural History which starts on SBS tomorrow night.

Apparently it’s a metaphor.

And it has a lot to do with the fact the Redfern is a train station just before Central Station in Sydney.

There are a lot of lovely old folk in this documentary who admit that instead of using contraception during the 1950s and 1960s they were instead “Getting off at Redfern.”

You learn something everyday….

Hosted by Julia Zemiro, it premieres at 10pm Friday night (duh) on SBS ONE.

  1. Tuned in last night, was just as bad as sitting in year 7 science class watching a dusty old VHS from the library the teacher put on because she’s hungover – disappointing.

  2. I will tune in to this. SBS always has something interesting at 10pm on a Friday Night. You would never see anything like this on any of the commercial networks. i know what network i would by if i was rich SBS ofcourse.

    Getting off at Redfern…. ie. going to town but not going all the way “in”…….

    ( snicker, snicker, snicker )

    I have never got off at Redfern….. mostly cos I don’t live in Sydney.

    (and yes, it was in Brides of Christ viz: the ep where Russell Crowe gets Kim Wilson “teenage” pregnant…… in fact the whole series was about it really but that’s an argument for another day……)

  7. You know what I hate about getting off at Redfern? There’s still too much protection! I always feel the need to give the security guards a spray on my way out.

  8. Hahahaha, yeah great witty Aussie expression for the oldest contraception method of them all. I spent many happy years in the ’90’s living in Redfern and getting off the train there. Great suburb!
