What can we expect in ABC1’s cheeky new comedy, At Home with Julia?

Here’s what’s in the first episode at 9:30pm on Wednesday September 7th.

Episode One:
“Before heading overseas, Julia has promised to make it up to Tim for always cancelling ‘Date Night’, with a romantic evening for two. But a last minute threat from Independent MPs Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor to cross the floor with Bob Katter leaves Julia no choice but to make it a very special romantic occasion… for five.”

  1. I’m no fan of our PM, but I think that the idea of this show is rude and distasteful.
And I won’t be watching it. Not a second. Terrible idea. Ugh.
    And from the ABC? Crazy.
    Need I say more?

  2. @Phil – I think you’re a little confused.
    1. The ABC has almost always outsourced drama and comedy production to external production companies – the public purse pays for all ABC programming, whether made internally or externally: The Chaser, Chris Lilley, The Slap, MDA, Crownies, Brides of Christ, you name it.
    2. This show is entirely populated by Australian actors. How is making this show depriving Australian actors of jobs? Don’t really get your point. Don’t think you really get your own point, either.
    3. The cuts to some ABC arts shows were not in order to fund these dramas and comedies. They were cut because they were expensive to make and not being watched by anyone. Those arts shows come from a totally different section of the ABC to the dramas and comedies. Defunding one has absolutely nothing to do with the other. With respect, you’re just misinformed.

@Margy – I’m a woman, too, and I’m offended that other women think we can’t do shows about female leaders just because they’re female. Why’s it ok to do shows about men but not women? That’s the height of sexism, isn’t it? I’m proud to have a female PM and want to see a show about her. My guess is they’re doing this show because Gillard is an interest subject and her relationship with Tim Mathieson is, historically, unusual. They wouldn’t do a show about Abbott because he’s unpleasant, unlikeable and no-one would watch.
This show stars and is written by a woman, appears to be directed by a woman and virtually everyone who runs programming in drama/comedy at the ABC is a woman. Those ABC execs have all been there years. They’re not new right wing nut job appointments. I’d be surprised if this show was some hatchet job on Gillard. The ABC would never make one of those. I think people on the left (I’m one) need to be able to tolerate satire about our leaders, just the way the right has had to tolerate endless parody and satire about Howard, Costello, etc.

  3. And it does not differ from Rove Live’s p*ss-take of “Kevin Rudd PM” back when K.Rudd was in charge, this just goes longer and this is an issue?? Margy, her being a woman has nothing to do with it…

  4. how you can say she doesn’t deserve this treatment is ludicrous. She is a woman of the public and its fair game. She can ostricise homosexuals and not giving them equality, so about time she got a taste of her own medicine.
She is a poor excuse for a PM and the fact the this show has been made, clearly indicates that no one takes her policies seriously, she cheated her way to the top, never had much respect from the Aust. public and she is laughed out of parliament and can now be laughed out of my telly…i cant wait to see this and i wait for the statement from Julia when the show airs “Oh, i don’t have much time in my life to watch telly, Australia needs to keep moving forward blah blah blah…
    .

  5. Totally bad taste and disrespectful. I bet they would not make a show called “At Home withTony”. Just because Julia is a women they think they can take the mickey out of her.

  6. I am disgusted with ABC news and current affairs for becoming Murdoch lite, and for outsourcing program production which is paid for by the public purse.
This means that we are no longer supporting Australian actors and worthwhile programs.
There should be a certain level of respect maintained for the office of the Prime Minister, and that excludes “soap opera” entertainment at the expense of any Prime Minister.

No thanks to John Howard for stacking the ABC with far right-wingers who don’t want the ABC to survive.

  7. It’s not that I find it bad taste, but I just think the entire premise of the show is so…unfunny. What about Julia Gillard’s personal life could possibly be funny? I mean, looking at that picture alone is making me cringe.

  8. @Indi-pendent
I agree that there needs to be more respect all around for the positions held by the people we elect. Question Time is farcical, with people more concerned about making conniving remarks than any meaningful debate. But that’s more about politics than TV, ay!

  9. @Smiley Mick & Byrannical
The current and previous parliaments have done an awesome job of belittling the PM position anyway, and do you really think the Mad Monk is any better?? At least this way we might actually get a positive out of Australian politics!

  10. @byranical, I thought so too at first. I mean, she is our PM! A current one, not some long retried one! But I kinda have the feeling she will be sympathetically portrayed in the end and if it’s a good, clever show, maybe it will work. Let’s see….

  11. @”Sir Les Patterson”
But there must be respect for the position that Julia holds, no matter whether we think she has done a decent job so far or not. Constitutionally she is our elected leader. We will have a chance to change that at the next election. For now though, the job that she does must be respected, and this TV show has the potential to belittle the title of ‘Prime Minister’.

  12. I really find the premise of this show distasteful. To make a comedy about a current Prime Minister is quite disrespectful and rude I think. It belittles PM Gillard (for some reason the media and some members of the public seem to have this view that when it comes to disrespecting the PM it’s open slather)

  13. That sounds kind of lame, but I hope the writing is good. Must admit I’m looking forward to watching it. Hoping since it’s on the ABC it will be done justice.
