The Block on top

The Block dominated Week 34 ratings giving Nine's primary channel a victory over Seven's. But Seven's multichannels helped it win Network share.

The Block dominated the ratings in Week 34, hitting the 2 million mark and landing 5 of the Top 10 shows, thanks to Nine’s strategic coding. As it faces its Auction finale tonight, the show has certainly attracted Nine’s best buzz in 2011.

And in a first for Nine this year its primary channel beat Seven’s -by 0.1%. Nine Network also won all three demos 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

But thanks to its multichannels, Seven still ranked ahead of Nine in Network share.

Seven’s best for the week was again Seven News (Sunday) on 1.61m.

It was a pretty dreadful week for TEN, with its primary channel finishing just 0.1% ahead of ABC1. Its highest ranked show was Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation on 889,000, all the way down at #37. Without MasterChef to serve up its performance has plummeted.

Week 34

20 Responses

  1. Jamie – the reason 7TWO does so well is new uk programming. Shows like Escape to the Country, 60 min makeover is brand new never seen on free to air and Hearbeat, Are you being served are old favourites that hadn’t been on 7 for quite a while. Gem/GO! show repeats of shows that have either recently been on 9 or shuffled movies that screen on Go one week and Gem the next. The odd new show gets lost amoungst the garbage.

  2. Last week was the won Seven was most worried about. And it faired pretty damn well. considering. Although they would have been happier with a .01 win on the primary channel, there will be smiles all around looking at that weekly result.

The rest of the year is a piece of cake for Seven – their work is done. Rafters returns, X-Factor returns and Wild Boys will see it home nicely (and easily) with its stable of other regular programs for the rest of the year.

  3. @Secret Squirrel

That may be the case but as a Seven “fanboi” as you like to call it, Seven have won the majority of weeks in their target 18-49 and 25-54 demos. They are actually leading these 2 demos by a bit of a margin on Nine. Not sure of the exact figures but they are. Nine just had one of those weeks. Seven have even had a lot of success in the younger demo 16-39’s too. Just because Nine had a good week doesn’t mean Nine is happy. They are running 2nd to Seven on all accounts.

As for this week as i said before it all comes down to consistency and without The Block Nine is going to fall down at least 1% per night imo because of this. Its going to be close this week don’t get me wrong but TEN had this issue a couple of weeks ago when they had a blockbuster Sunday night then failed for the rest of the week. This could and might well happen to Nine.

  4. @ tmorgan, that may be true for this week, and for a few weeks this year, but Seven have won the overwhelming majority of weeks in their target 18-49 and 25-54 demos, in addition to 16-39 which they don’t even actively target. This was Nine’s biggest opportunity to dominate a week this year. They lost total people, anything less than a win in the demos would have been considered a fail. With The Block over, I’d expect to see Nine sink well behind Seven in the demos and total people for the remainder of the year.

  5. @Jamie – it’s not so much that Seven’s multis do so well but that the others don’t. Eleven is the newest of the lot and is possibly still building a regular audience, altho’ it might just be suffering from “Tenitus”. One is recovering from a failed experiment and then having it’s heart ripped out, and still finding its feet.

The real question is why are Go! and GEM not performing better? Go! was great when it first started, a breath of fresh air, and I certainly watched a few shows on it. Then the malaise of seemingly random schedule shuffling and unexplained gaps in series took hold and I basically gave up on it. GEM is a mess of unfilled promises, old sitcoms, cute animals, medical shock, and a small amount of reasonable first-run content. Given it’s target demo, you would have thought that it might be doing better in the grocery buyers and GB + child demos.

Still, while the Seven fanbois like to crow about “winning the week”, Nine will not be too unhappy while they keep taking out the demos because that’s where the money is.

  6. Nine (the primary channel) won the week. Seven came second by 0.1%.
With multichannels added (sometimes called multiplexes), Seven won thanks to the oldies flocking to 7TWO.
But that doesn’t mean Seven is king. Nine and GO! skew towards a more youthful and advertiser friendly audience so they are the real winners. Since they cleaned the demos, they are actually more attractive and lucrative to advertisers and make more money.
My question is how long will it take for Australian TV to begin to measure ratings like they do in the US?
The Yanks put the younger demos ahead of total audience and that makes television far more competitive .
Nine won the week in my opinion, because they are winning where it counts.

  7. @Jamie – if you don’t get it maybe you should have a look at a program schedule and then look at what each show rates – that produces a channel share… I think you’ll find it’s depth of programming that enables a channel to win.

  8. @ Jamie. Nine will have a huge night tonight. But beyond that, their schedule is on very shakey ground. Without The Block on weeknight I think Nine will plummet.

  9. how can seven’s multi outperform their counter parts by so much… i dont get it? 7two leads all by 1 point.. and 7mate leads all hd’s by over a point? why?

  10. This week is going to be a very interesting one. It is Nine’s to lose since it is predicted to have a 40%+ Sunday but Seven could counter that with an extremely strong Tuesday. Rafters is back, Winners and Losers has its finale so i guess it comes down to how all channels perform.

Its proven Seven has the dominant digital channels alongside its main channel. 7TWO is #1 on SD Digital channels, 7mate is #1 on HD digital channels and Seven is #1 on main channels.

Seven is expected to win Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday again this week while i see Sunday, Monday and Thursday going to Nine. Its all about who is the most consistent. Its Nines to lose. If they can’t win this week they wont win a week this year.

  11. This coming week will all depend on tonight. Nine have ‘Super Sunday’, but Seven have a storng week following, especially on Tuesday with the return of PttR.

  12. This was one of 7’s narrowest wins of the year but I’d say this week is their biggest achievement yet. The was 9s to lose and 7 ended up winning by a decent 2%.
7 should be able to put their feet up now and still get a clean sweep with 40 weekly wins.
