Would Cuddy return if House has a final season?

Both Lisa Edelstein and House creator David Shore have been asked about the idea of Cuddy returning if the drama was to end. Minor Spoilers.

Minor Spoilers: We don’t yet know if Season 8 of House will be the medical drama’s swansong, but given the way Dr. Lisa Cuddy exited rather abruptly, would it be fitting to bring her back for any Finale?

Both Lisa Edelstein, who has a 3 episode arc in The Good Wife, and Creator Producer David Shore have been tackled on the subject.

Here’s are some excerpts of the interview Edelstein gave to TV Line:

TV LINE: Given how the season ended, I’m guessing you didn’t walk away with a sense of closure storyline-wise.
LE: No. Definitely not. It wasn’t an expected turn of events — for anybody. But that’s what happens sometimes.

TV LINE: What was your reaction to that finale?
LE: [Laughs] People were really up in arms! They thought House was trying to kill Cuddy. I totally understand their argument. How could you drive a car into a house where you know that your friends are, where you know there’s a child, and not think that? It really is homicidal. Although in the script it didn’t read that way because it was very clear that [Cuddy and her friends and family] had left that room. It’s still a very extreme thing to do. It definitely pushes the envelope quite a bit.

TV LINE: If this turns out to be the show’s final season, would you be open to returning as a guest star?
LE: I haven’t talked to anyone over there so it would seem unlikely. Who knows what I’ll be doing. I have a lot on my plate. I wouldn’t want to answer that and get anyone’s hopes up. It doesn’t seem like that’s the direction anyone is going in.

Meanwhile David Shore has also spoken to TV Addict:

TV Addict: What do you tell fans who are still upset over Lisa Edelstein’s unexpected exit?
DS: I tell them I’m upset too. I’m sorry, things did not unfold the way I wanted. But I will say this. I am actually genuinely excited about this year. I am excited about the new dynamics we’re going to see by bringing in new people and in terms of House and the new boss I think that will be good for the show. I think it will breathe some fresh air into the show — not that we needed it — but I think it will and we’ll sort of get back to what made the show great initially.

TV Addict: Is there any chance Cuddy could return for the finale, should this end up being HOUSE’s final season?
DS: I would love that but I have no idea if it would be possible. I can’t say more than that because I really don’t know.

TV Addict: Are you writing this season as if it’s HOUSE’s last?
DS: We’re not going into it like it’s the last season, but if it is going to be the last season I want to know that very early and I’ll make sure I do know that very early because I want to end it right. I want to have lots of lead time on that so if there’s going to be a season nine we need to know that early — and I would l love there to be a season nine — but we need to know it early and if we don’t know it early this will be the last year and I’ll make sure we go out great.

  1. Sounds like contract renegotiations didn’t go well between these two. Don’t hold your breath about seeing her in the show again. However, if he does want to close the show in a big way with closure for the audience, she would have to appear in the finale. Depends if she has another long-term series gig by then though.
