8:30pm Rebirth
Premiering on the 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11, Rebirth is a riveting journey into living history an act of personal witness to one of the most profoundly consequential events in American history and the healing that has come in its wake. How does the journey of grieving and recovery unfold for individuals and a nation? Rebirth chronicles the lives of five people profoundly affected by the 9/11 attacks. As a decade passes, we witness the progress of a student whose mother perished, a widow of a first responder, a woman who survived above the impact zone, a man who oversees Ground Zero construction, and a fire fighter who lost his closest friends. As they cope with the excruciating and evolving pain of loss, time helps them refashion the scaffolding of their lives. Meanwhile, amazingly, 14 time lapse cameras chart the entire multiyear rebuilding of 7 World Trade Center the first structure to rise to completion after the tragedy. The site’s renewal becomes a stunning metaphor for the cycle of life while the film’s characters reflect the resilience of humanity and the possibility of transformation in the face of anguish. Inspiring a collective catharsis, this exquisitely moving documentary helps us process what is unimaginable. Rebirth is directed by Jim Whitaker and produced by David Solomon and Whitaker, with Danielle Beverly serving as field producer. The director of photography is Tom Lappin and the editors are Kevin Filippini and Brad Fuller. The film’s original score is composed by Academy Award winner Philip Glass.

10:15pm Compass: 9/11 Ten Years On
Compass examines the deep and enduring social, religious and cultural implications of 9/11 from an Australian perspective through the eyes of those directly affected. Ten years ago we watched in disbelief as the Twin Towers collapsed before our eyes. Even as it was happening we were told the ‘world had changed’ and a decade on, it’s evident many things have: from terrorism to heightened security and suspicion toward many things Muslim. The legacy of 9/11 vacillates between personal loss and the collective experience of tragedy. Religion has come under the spotlight too, while ‘Islamophobia’ and moral panic about values have led some to claim that Multiculturalism has failed. But has 9/11 really changed as us a society? What about our faith, values and perceptions? In this 10th anniversary special, Compass reflects on the ongoing repercussions and legacy of 9/11 through the experiences of Australians directly and indirectly affected. Two powerful personal stories propel this story. Paul Gyulavar’s twin brother Peter was one of the 13 known Australians killed in the attacks. He was an architect working in the South Tower on Level 91. Ben Matthews was in New York staying in a hotel next door to the Twin Towers. Sleeping in saved his life, but he got caught up in the chaotic aftermath. His photographs provide an intensely personal and never before seen perspective on the moments after the attacks. As these personal stories unfold, a diverse range of informants and social commentators address the legacy and consequences of 9/11 for Australia.

7:00pm Footnotes of 9/11
CNN investigative correspondent Drew Griffin reports on the people who went to work on 9/11 -and unexpectedly became part of history. They are the literal and figurative footnotes to one of America’s darkest days: the ticket agents who checked in some of the terrorists, a maintenance technician who answered a call from one of the planes under attack, and the Air Force reservist – also a United Airlines pilot – who scrambled to provide defense to New York, and faced possibly having to shoot down a passenger plane. Each of the eight people profiled for this documentary is mentioned in The 9/11 Commission Report – their unique experiences hidden in the 1,742 footnotes, which offer critical detail to the tragic events of that day.

8pm 9/11 Portraits of Resilience
Captured in words and moving images, this documentary features untold stories drawn from 40 women and men who led and sacrificed for America in the hours, days, and months that followed the attacks. Working with the editors of TIME, award-winning photographer Marco Grob produced an astonishing set of portraits which are coupled with dramatic recollections from government leaders, survivors of the towers, and those first to respond.

Sun Sept 11
8:30pm 9/11: The Days After
It is ten years since the age of terror began in earnest. From the moment the Twin Towers fell, 9/11 was seen as a watershed, a historical turning point of epic, irreversible proportions. Since then we’ve said, again and again, that 9/11 changed everything and that nothing would ever be the same. Indeed, vast changes have in fact been spawned by 9/11 political, cultural, and sociological; intellectual, emotional, and psychological in New York, throughout America, and around the world. And yet so much about how we live our lives today remains the same as it ever was. 9/12: The Day After builds upon the format established by 102 Minutes That Changed America to examine the legacy of 9/11 – constructing an evocative, engaging and immersive narrative using exclusively archival audiovisual material assembled without contextualizing narration or interviews. The result is an authentic, unflinchingly honest look at what happened after the tragedy – a chronicle of life in a changed world.

BBC KNOWLEDGE:
4:50pm 911 State of Emergency
An immersive, compelling drama-documentary revealing the moments when political and military leaders and ordinary men and women found themselves on the front-lines of a new kind of war. On 9/11 the world changed forever, and America was tested as never before – putting the judgement, values, bravery and ability to react of leaders and ordinary men and women alike under intense scrutiny. Offering a minute by minute account of that day, this film follows a range of people – some very famous, some very private – and discovers how they behaved and how well they believe they responded. Previous films have taken us inside the Pentagon, the World Trade Centre and Flight 93. This is the first film to treat 9/11 as a single organic event, interweaving stories from all key players and perspectives and moving from the cauldron that was air traffic control, to the White House Situation Room and the cockpits of F16s tasked with hunting down civilian airliners. The film also reveals the stories of ordinary men and women – air force pilots, fire chiefs, relatives of hijacked passengers – who also faced an unprecedented challenge. Combining interviews and narration with unique archive and atmospheric drama reconstruction, 9/11 – State of Emergency flashes between the chaos of a government in crisis – rendered more accurately than ever before – and the courage and determination of the many ordinary heroes of 9/11. All of them, in their own way, responding to the test of their lifetimes.

CRIME & INVESTIGATION
9:30pm 9/11
For millions of people alive today the most significant political event of their lifetimes will be the destruction of the World Trade Centre on September 11th 2001. It was, without question, the day the world changed. Not since the Second World War has a deliberate human act of unparalleled aggression had such far-reaching consequences – it now seems impossible to imagine a world without the threat of terrorism. Combining sensitive dramatic reconstruction formulated from the 9/11 Commission Report with eyewitness accounts, this major television film captures the unfolding events of a single day in history. Told through the eyes of the emergency services, the Federal Aviation Authority, the US Government and the survivors, and using the testimony of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Osama Bin Laden’s mastermind behind the attacks who was captured in 2003 – each story is represented accurately to convey the significance of events from all sides. The individual agony, anguish and humanity of those involved are now brought to life through immersive drama-documentary. This is the story of our century – waiting to be told.

  1. This again shows why the ABC should get the Australia Network contract.

The ABC has hours of original coverage with multiple reporters on the ground in the US and Afghanistan and crosses to places all around the world.

Sky will provide live crosses to New York (but apparently nowhere else) and will rely on taking a feed from a US network.

  2. Engineering Ground Zero and ABC News 24’s 9/11 coverage from New York will also be broadcast on ABC’s Asia-Pacific satellite service Australia Network, at 7.30pm and 8.30pm (Hong Kong time) respectively.
