Julia sitcom wins its timeslot

More than a million viewers sampled At Home with Julia last night as ABC1 again beat Nine and TEN's primary channels.

More than a million viewers sampled ABC1’s new comedy At Home with Julia last night.

The new comedy pulled 1.06m viewers in its 9:30pm timeslot, more than any show on Channel Nine and TEN all night.

The show was trending on Twitter last night with a mostly favourable response. But Therese Rein called it “pretty rough, frankly” and said nobody’s private life should be subjected to such ridicule. I guess she didn’t empathise with the portrayal of Tim Mathieson, either.

For the second week in a row ABC1’s Wednesday line-up defeated Nine and TEN’s primary channels. The Gruen Transfer was its best performer on 1.16m, with a good retention into the new sitcom. Spicks and Specks pulled 1m viewers, also winning its timeslot.

But it was The X Factor that again topped the night, with 1.52m viewers, more than double The Renovators (631,000),  Ocean Giants (624,000),  7.30 / Poh’s Kitchen (614,000 / 558,000) and Tropic Of Cancer (256,000).

At 8:30pm second place went to Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (893,000), then Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (754,000), The Mentalist (515,000), and The Hotel (132,000).

The finale for Top Design was 207,000 at 10:30pm. Not a very cost effective way to give away $100,000.

Neighbours topped the multichannels on 323,000.

Seven continues its winning streak. It was a three way battle for second place with TEN pushed to fourth spot in network shares.

  1. “I could not get past that womans voice in the ads….horrible….cringe worthy…poor excuse for comedy.”

Yeah me too. I prefer that good Aussie stuff on Channel Nine, particularly Scotty Cam – he’s great ! Shelley Craft is marvellous as well.

They are probably the top stars of Aussie telly, and Larry Emdur of course.

  2. I want to know what made X Factor such a hit this time around? I mean, I didn’t watch it last year- and aparently not many others did either… But this year I watched because of Natalie Bassingthwaighte- and have stayed for the fun.

Is it because there’s literally no competition thanks to The Renovator’s horrible launch timing, or Ch9’s dull schedule?

But yes, the live shows are going to pull in big numbers- 1.7-2.0 easily. With the finale with over 2.5. Way to go Nat and X Factor!

  3. Really not surprised by the ‘At Home with Julia’ ratings, one of the greatest comedies in Australia. Poor Tim-Tam (Teacup, teapot, Mr T etc) is going to be the icon of this series.

  4. Really enjoyed Julia last night – very funny, very witty, very well cast.

(Is the guy doing the radio V/O for Labor’s Pro Carbon Tax propaganda Julia’s love child? He drones on like a somnambulist – the same way our PM speaks when she’s trying to send us all to sleep so we won’t be aware of her latest blunders…)

Note that Crim Minds: Suspect Behaviour is certainly steady around the 900,000 mark – so I withdraw my negative comment a few weeks ago that said show wouldn’t complete its 10 episode run in that timeslot.

The Hotel on SBS was enjoyable too. Shame it’s overlooked by the great unwashed…

  5. I agree. I don’t think anyone predicted these type’s of numbers. Massive props go to Fremantle and Seven. They’ve done a great job turning the show around. The live shows will do great work for Seven. I think the show would do better on a Tuesday/Wednesday schedule rather than the Monday/Tuesday that is planned. Seven have really got that Tuesday 7:30 slot down pat.
