Living Black: Sept 18

Living Black examines the last indigenous intervention, ahead of the government planning another.

SBS series Living Black is presented on location this week from Hermannsburg in the Central Desert, and will feature the first of a three part series examining the intervention, undertaken by the Howard government.

SBS claims the Gillard government is planning a second intervention.

INTERVENTION OVERVIEW: The Northern Territory Emergency Response known as the ‘intervention’ was first rolled out more than four years ago.

The Gillard Government’s planning a second intervention, but there are concerns Aboriginal people are not being given the chance to negotiate the way forward.

The Central Land Council is one group demanding another round of consultations.

In the first of a three part series examining the intervention, Richard Davis travelled to the Northern Territory to investigate this news making story as the clock ticks and the government is required to make a decision soon on whether a second intervention will take place.

QUEENSLAND HOMELESS: It is estimated that there are more than a hundred thousand Australians homeless every night.

Sadly Indigenous people are over represented in that statistic.

Allan Clarke took to the streets of Cairns in North Queensland to investigate why so many Indigenous people in this area struggle to find adequate accommodation.

ANIMAL DREAMING: Country music veteran Col Hardy is no stranger to the stage – he was the first Indigenous singer to win a Golden Guitar in 1973.

These days the Kamileroi elder is using his passion for music to teach young people about Australia’s native animals and their Indigenous connections. He works closely with representatives from Taronga Zoo to impart his traditional wisdom. Josh Ridgeway meets with Col to find out more on his rewarding work.
