  1. @DansDans The cricket was putting up good numbers given that we are at the beginning of the footy finals. I think international and domestic cricket will do well this year (Oct-March) for Foxtel. After the three footy codes cricket was the next best. Also the Ryobi Cup did ok last year against the A-League and has been fixed up since last year. It won’t pull massive numbers but, it will do well against the A-League, as I think it will be a neck and neck battle (although Victory and Sydney FC games will beat it for the first half of the season of the domestic season).
Also, my idea of good numbers is may be lower than yours as well.

  2. I cannot believe the crap that is broadcast via free to air and subscription TV. The focus on sports and reality-based/voyeuristic programs is hard to comprehend. Perhaps if people actually participated in sports, as opposed to simply watching them, the nation’s obesity statistics would probably be significantly lower. Furthermore, the question of why so many people feel they need to experience life in a vicarious manner, rather than leading their own lives would appear to require serious attention- do we, as individuals, feel so diminished that we need to confirm our worth through the experiences of others; The Kardashian’s, Mel B, Guilana & Bill- do their experiences represent our aspirations in terms of the ‘ideal life’?. TV productions reinforce this situation by increasing their production of similar shows- thus creating a negative cycle where audience viewing habits are determined through limited choices which provides a false illusion of issues/topics considered as being culturally popular.

Overall, diversity and choice is key; sports and reality shows are fine- but Do not forget that other shows, for example ‘Spirited’, ‘Sliders’, ‘Burn Notice’ also have their place- otherwise, free-to-air and/or subscription TV will only appeal to specific populations and those not accounted for, tuning out and relying solely on DVD’s purchased via sites such as Amazon- which, again, only serves to reinforce the myths and falsehoods perceived to represent audience requirements.

  3. With the two major footy codes winding up these charts will be interesting… RWC is there, but doubt you’ll see strong cricket numbers except for the new 20/20 competition
