Phone hackers beware. Lowdown is back.

Shooting begins today on the second season of the Adam Zwar tabloid newspaper comedy,  Lowdown.

Zwar reprises his role as Alex Burchill, the entertainment reporter for the fictional Sunday Sun (hack, hack hack?).

Guest starring this season are Matt Preston, Brett Tucker, Patrick Brammall, Jess Harris, Colin Lane, Rick Davies, Steve Bastoni, Matt Dyktynski and Toby Truslove .

Creators Amanda Brotchie and Adam Zwar say, “We’re delighted to be getting the Lowdown team back together and to be joined by such a stellar cast and crew. There probably isn’t a better time to be making a comedy about the misadventures of a tabloid journalist.”

ABC Executive Producer Debbie Lee added, “With juicy storylines, fabulous cast and an amazing supporting line-up, it’s great to be working with the Lowdown team again.”

It will air next year.

Driven by their editor (Kim Gyngell), Alex and his photographer mate, Bob (Paul Denny), continue to risk life, limb and moral compass to uncover the private misdoings of celebrities and repackaging them for public consumption. From exposing political sex scandals and violent actors to outing gay sportsmen and setting up cheating TV-chefs, Alex knows he’s probably not contributing to a better society, but he hasn’t got time to worry about that now. The Sunday Sun’s circulation is in free-fall and the only thing that will save it is a story about a woman marrying her cat.

Outside of work, Alex struggles to find a place to call home while his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Rita (Beth Buchanan), battles with the idea that it might be time to give up her art and get a real job. Dr James (Dalian Evans) re-invents his medical career, and could Bob be headed for matrimony?

Sold to BBC4 in the UK, Lowdown has also received a number of awards including; the 2010 AWGIE Award for Best Comedy and three awards at The Accolade Competition in Los Angeles, for lead actor (Adam Zwar), direction (Amanda Brotchie) and comedy program; and a gold medal for Best Situation Comedy at the New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards.

Lowdown will be shot on location around Melbourne and will air next year on ABC1.
