Ratings war to focus on Seven

Seven's grip on the ratings continued in Week 38, but Nine and TEN begin a slew of fast-tracked new content from the US as early as Tuesday.

Seven’s grip on the ratings continued in Week 38, with 14 of the top rating 20 shows, but Nine and TEN are hoping to turn their fortunes around.

A slew of fast-tracked new content from the US begins as early as Tuesday and ramps up next week. It comes at a time when advertising rates will soon be set for 2012. But ratings leader Seven will also reveal its 2012 programming to media buyers this week.

In Week 38 Packed to the Rafters was Seven’s top show on 1.56m viewers, followed by Seven News, Sunday Night, The X Factor, Wild Boys and Bones.

Underbelly: Razor was Nine’s best performer on 1.46m followed by Nine News, 60 Minutes and The Farmer Wants a Wife.

TEN didn’t crack the magic million all week, with an AFL match its biggest drawcard on 993,000 followed by NCIS and Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation.

  1. @ Guy I thought shows were more expensive when they were bought closer to their release date! This was my understanding with the ABC and their purchase of shows, since they are cheaper when older. Either things have changed or I never knew how TV stations buy the rights to tv shows!

  2. @Nik k

I think it was David that said this but it doesn’t cost the networks any more or any less to fast-track or not fast-track a series. So thats why i say why not?

  3. @Jerome – I agree there is a downside to fast tracking, they have to follow the US schedule so we might have weeks off and there is a mid season break for most shows. But correct me if I’m wrong, Terra Nova has 13 eps, a double to start and I think they are planing to run without a break until December and the season final. Question is will TEN run the season out or stop when the ratings season ends? Beyond that if the show fails to rate will the shelve it or just move it over to ch11 or ONE. I really wish they would encore shows like this on ONE in full HD.

  4. The only way fast tracking works if our Networks do away with the silly ‘off peak’ summer ratings.

Honestly who cares if they show first run episodes during January? Things would still be the same i.e 1st Seven 2nd Nine 3rd TEN and the numbers wouldn’t decrease as much per show i.e still keeping revenue up…

  5. @ Franz Rafters has dropped a bit recently so it might struggle more if ppl like the new 2.5 men!
@ Guy 7 will fast track as little as possible since they dropped first run eps of City Homicide wen they were so far ahead in the ratings a couple of years ago! This will keep costs down & profits up!

  6. Fast tracking never works….Viewers lose interest on the show coz they have to wait for so long and then they have to remember everything that happened in the previous eps coz they are interlinked

  7. Don’t get me wrong, I think fasttracking is good when it is done properly and in moderation. Shows like charlies angels may as well be fasttracked and get a few episodes to air otherwise they will just be axed in the US and forgotten by the Aus network. And Procedurals like NCIS and Criminal Minds where repeats can easily be slotted in and a big break a few episodes in doesnt impact The series too much can be fasttracked too.

  8. Maybe it’s time Nine went into receivership and got rid of the debt that has sunk the network? Lets face it, how can they do anything new, let alone brave or bold with a $400M pa interest bill? How can they reinvent theri drama slate when they cannot afford a genre head? This is true for every genre so you’ve got Michael Healy commissioning everything. The results speak f for themselves. Time for the management team to announce their defeat. Ten are in a similar place – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Now it’s also a basket case and Seven are winning everything by default.

  9. So… Ten was beaten by 2 panel-style comedy shows on ABC1 (Gruen and S&S) and even a cancelled (though technically still a “first-run”) show on 7 (Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior), all of which cracked the million?! Just… wow.

  10. It seems to me that the fasttracking 9 & ten is doing is more about ratings quick fixes and filling slots rather than it being in the best interest of the viewing experience or combating piracy. The erratic scheduling and low rating that comes with fasttracking only hurts shows and networks in the long run. I think the biggest mistake is Terra Nova such a big show is going to have little promotion and be chopped down the middle will instead of a proper big promotion during summer and a 13 week run in one timeslot from Feb.

  11. Ratings must have been down for the week as Top Gear AU made it into the top 100 but with lower ratings than last week.

I agree with the flood of new and returning fast tracked shows 9 & 10 are taking up the challenge to Seven, bring it on!

  12. Good week again to Seven and when you think about it they are not doing that much to win either. I am worried for them though with Nine and TEN beginning the fast-tracking of shows. Mind you Charlie’s Angels is predicted to be the first show to be axed so that one doesn’t worry me.

If i were Seven i would fast-track Desperate Housewives but promotion is too late now for it, Castle, Criminal Minds, The Amazing Race and something for Sunday night 8:30pm so i guess Downton Abbey.
