  1. @Indi-pendent,

yes, you are one of the ones I was referring to in my opening line.

“free flights”! Here’s a tip – if you’re going to attempt to use sarcasm to promote your cause, do so by all means but at least possess some wit.

Condemnation is all they deserve. If they’re not going to broadcast the finals matches of a Grand Slam in which an Australian is a participant then they need to keep their fingers out of the whole event. Don’t muddy the waters – leave it to someone who might. Broadcasters have multiple stations – it’s very, very easy for them to make last minute adjustments for events of significance – and given that an Australian women had not won a Grand Slam since 1980! – I’d say it’s a pretty significant event.

As for suggesting that the people posting here “have issues”, I’d suggest some personal introspection.

  2. Please, please Channel 9 show a replay – I was at work while it was being played and thought it was going to be replayed on Gem at 5.30pm….. wrong 5.30am apparently – oh well – you can’t win them all!

  3. @Wiseone
And perhaps if Qantas had any wisdom they could have provided free flights to the match, after all they had 2 days notice!
Honestly, you offer only “condemnation” for a national TV Network and regional affiliate (WIN) who have rejigged their whole broadcast schedule to provide a Free Service enabling Aussie sports fans to enjoy a great moment, whilst others like Paul accuse them (9) of jumping on the bandwagon. Obviously Tony Abbot is having a bigger influence on public thinking than I thought judging by the prevalent negativity found here.
I cannot believe FTA programming decisions have such a dire and profound effect on so many of you…it would indicate that either TV is vitally important to you,or, that you may have issues….or…both.

  4. Anyone who is congratulating Nine needs their head read. Their own supposedly “up to the minute” digital Guide (and every other Guide) did Not list the match as being Broadcast. Nine had known for 2 days that Stosur would be in the Final. If they wanted to broadcast the Final they should have saturated the airwaves with advertising that they would be doing so. Also, if the heads at Nine had any wisdom, they would have started to broadcast matches as soon as Stosur made it past the Quarters. So absolutely no congratulations should be given to Nine, only condemnation. And if they have any decency at all, they will be broadcasting a replay.

“the only place to see the us open from start to finish” sounds exclusive to me, fta shouldn’t cop all the whinging

  6. I would like to thank Nine for showing this event on FTA……I do not have pay TV….and Nine were not obliged to show it…..I saw a number of posts in here asking for it to be on FTA……well it is…..stop whinging….I for one am happy.

  7. Talk about ingrates…9 were under no obligation to show it but they did-it’s called service, and it’s Free! Ironically there would probably be less whingeing if they had just broadcast as usual and simply shown highlights in the sports segment.

  8. Bloody typical, I turn on tv @ 6 am in perth having checked scores on us open site and perth gets final in two hour delay. Im angry, if I was able to watch foxtel it would live but stuck in hospital there is no choice, just like for the majority of rural. Go on u 9 for keeping us as 2nd class viewing citizens, very poor show.

  9. @farhan

Thats not the point. Nine abuse these tournaments when it only suits them. Look what they did with Wimbledon. They scrapped it after so long covering it. Seven did pick it up and showed it brilliantly. A lot better than Nine ever did but Nine think they can just pick things up when they please.

I would have loved to see the whole tournament like FoxSports has been showing but since PayTV is expensive these days its just unaffordable and FTA should really show major events like this. Look at TEN they are waiting until Friday to show the Emmys. Why? Its a stupid programming move. Nine just treats things like crap.

  10. @farhan – Foxtel have never had exclusive rights to the French Open(currently shared with Nine and in previously years the ABC and Seven), but they supposedly had exclusive rights to the US Open (according to their press releases).

  11. @ Gary, they only decide to show the match because we have an Aussie in the final, the made the same exception when Stosur made the French Open final last year!, despite foxsports having exclusive rights
You should be happy, it’s better than nothing – Because of the national significance of this match, it’s on! i’d rather it on Fox, with proper coverage than 9 and be non comitted!

@Craig Brown. it will definitely be live, 100% guarantee, i don’t know what sources you’ve read but definitely a NB 6:30am start (our time) – besides, It makes no sense to have it on a half hour delay anyway!!

If Sam wins this, and it’s a big if, it will be Australia’s 2nd greatest performance by an individual this year……would be no.1 in most other years had it not been for Cadel Evans amazing heroics!! ——– Go Slammin Sam!

  12. I guess theyl start broadcast at 6.30 but with all the pre match stuff the game won’t start until 6.30am. I’m gettin up at 6am just to be on the safe side 🙂 but it’s bull how they haven’t bothered to broadcast any of her other matches, and only wanna jump on board the bandwagon now. True supporters like us follow her week in week out. Win or lose. Best of luck to her. Gonna be a tough task, but she can do it.

  13. So typical. They couldn’t give a rats ass about the whole tournament and then decide to show it. If they want to show the US Open show the whole tournament not just one match.

Regarding Stosur good luck to her. She has had a fantastic run. Hope she can steamroll Williams on home turf. She is the underdog that is for sure but you just never go. Go Sammy!
