Actor Andy Whitfield, who played the lead role in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died in Sydney at just 39 years of age.

His manager Sam Maydew said Whitfield died yesterday of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Whitfield was diagnosed 18 months ago causing the Starz series to create a spin-off Spartacus: Gods of the Arena with actor Dustin Clare. While he had hoped to recover for the second season, Whitfield was forced to withdraw and actor Liam McIntyre was cast in the title role.

Whitfield’s wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in the “arms of his loving wife”.

Welsh born Whitfield was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in Spartacus. His other television roles included McLeod’s Daughters, Packed to the Rafters, The Strip, All Saints and a movie role in Gabriel.

  1. I am deeply saddened to hear that Andy Whitfield has died. I have followed some of his career – Gabriel – which is why I watched Spartacus. It was in Spartacus that I truly believed he was equal in vigor, focus, acting, with way more charisma than Russell Crowe.
I have only discovered Andy’s passing a few moments ago because I was checking the www to find out whether Andy might be returning to the screen to take over Spartacus again…you see, I too have kept tabs on how his health was doing and believed that he was doing well. He will be missed by many viewers. I feel so very upset for his family. I’m shocked…I think I might have to do a Spartacus dvd marathon with all my friends who are also fans of Andy and the series. All the best to his fans and family…

  2. Such sadness for his family and friends to lose Andy.
To the fans how blessed were we to see him in a
superb role as Spartacus Blood and Sand. Beautiful man
with a beautiful heart and such presence on screen.

  3. He was so good in Blood and Sand, showing a real star quality. He shone in that role as Spartacus.

It’s such sad news to hear of his passing. I really hoped he’d beat the odds. Rest in peace, Andy. You will be loved and remembered.
